Tonight from Scarecrow: BUG (2006)

This shot hit a spot so intensely that I rewinded the movie so I could take a video of it

Watched David Robert Mitchell's Under the Silver Lake last night and it inspired me to make this list--send recs please

Let's see if I can write this alt text in a way that won't attract randoms searching for certain words

Tonight at @grandillusioncinema.org: THE GIRL WITH THE NEEDLE (Magnus von Horn, 2024)

This was the most unsettling movie with "The Girl with the ___" as a title that l've ever seen!

feels like von Horn watched The White Ribbon and was like, "that was good but a bit light on the human suffering"

we survived to another Retrospective List Day, good job everyone!

Last night from Scarecrow: IRREVERSIBLE (Gaspar Noé, 2003)

well, the band-aid's off

Monica Bellucci's performance (and direction) will never leave me as long as I live.

The movie hit its mark but the misanthropy of early Noé is pretty fucking exhausting

INCREDIBLE sound design, credits, etc

Last night from Scarecrow: EASTERN PROMISES (David Cronenberg, 2007)

I feel like all I've heard about this is the naked fight scene and while it's a very good movie... yeah the buck-ass naked fight scene really is the main thing to talk about, sweet jesus

This week on Steam: MOUTHWASHING (Wrong Organ, 2024)

This is the year I'm all about the narrative adventure games, and buddy...

Alex Navarro called this "tremendously fucked up" as a compliment and idk what to add, $12 for some outstanding surrealist psych horror

This game, Pentiment... I just finished it, tears still drying. What a beautiful work of art. Highest recommendation

and Lingua Ignota contributing original music, wow!

Today at SIFF Uptown: QUEER (Luca Guadagnino, 2024)

I've only taken in the "movies aren't sexy anymore" discourse in my periphery, but I can only assume the people having those conversations are NOT watching the same movies as me

(this movie ruled)

THE BODY & DIS FIG - ORCHARDS OF A FUTILE HEAVEN

The Body is a perennial favorite of mine who've intro'd me to MANY incredible artists via their collabs; Dis Fig might be their perfect match. Her haunting melodies complete The Body's horrible noise like nothing else; do NOT miss this trio live

age yourself with a movie you saw in the theater as a kid

CHELSEA WOLFE - SHE REACHES OUT TO SHE REACHES OUT TO SHE

Anything CW releases is getting special attention from me, but this is maybe my favorite from her yet. A cathartic journey through the many styles she's explored before, reflecting on past trials and looking ahead with determination
December 11, 2024 at 8:13 PM
that was fun

Disappointment and apathy seem harder and harder for me to escape lately... but our artists are giving me more to be excited about than ever.

Not into rankings or any of that, just want to celebrate an arbitrary number of the albums that excited me the most.

This morning from Scarecrow: PARIS, TEXAS (Wim Wenders, 1984)

This was testing my patience real hard for a while despite the great acting and photography, but HOLY hell it packed a punch in the final act. look at that shot!

Negative: I kind of hated the score 🤷

This week from Scarecrow: I Stand Alone (Gaspar Noé, 1998)

fucking vile, depraved movie

Like Taxi Driver if Schrader and Scorsese would've had the nerve to make a movie as ugly and horrible as its main character deserved.

inspired me to make this LB list, like a well-adjusted and non-depraved person

(suggestions welcomed!)

Last night from Scarecrow: THE HOUSE THAT JACK BUILT (Lars Von Trier, 2018)

lol what the fuck

I started "getting" the more tasteless/exploitative parts of movies from Von Trier-types when I realized they just get off on making yuppie Cannes snobs squirm and jeer, which is... understandable
November 28, 2024 at 9:38 PM
BTW this is where I'm at, shoot me what you think I'm missing and it's very likely I'll actually listen to the whole thing!

Last night from Scarecrow Video: Civil War (2024, Alex Garland)

(Rented this to test out my newly thrifted surround system, good choice)

I've been lukewarm on Garland but this is my favorite from him so far, nailed it in too many ways for me to belabor the things I didn't like
November 24, 2024 at 6:16 PM
good morning or whatever
November 22, 2024 at 6:00 PM
Last night from Scarecrow Video: Beau Travail (Claire Denis, 1999)

This was real pretty and physical but I dunno, it wasn't connecting much as I watched it and then supp. reading only helped a little. Maybe a pallete cleanse from jerkoff French arthouse after the Haneke movie before would've helped
