“Of course, little lady, if that’s what you want. But there are a couple of things we should talk about before you decide.” Sylvain winks, just for the giggle he knows it’ll get him, before launching into his usual sales pitch. “Just to be clear, what I can do is create a perfume for you that will smell like the person you’re meant for, the person who’s meant for you. Your soulmate, for lack of a better term.” She gasps, starry-eyed, and he immediately veers into his standard disclaimers. “I can’t tell you anything else about them. I can’t tell you their name or where they live. I can’t tell you when you’ll meet them, or whether you’ve already met them.” His eyes dart, unintentionally, toward the man behind her. He’s making a big show of scrolling on his phone, trying very hard to look like he isn’t listening. “Nothing about the timeline at all.” Sylvain pauses for a moment, because the next caveat is newer, and it hasn’t been part of his whole monologue long enough to feel natural yet. “I can’t even tell you if they’re still alive,” he continues, voice a little lower, trying very hard not to think of how he found out about that charming limitation, “because Fate is not always kind.” The man’s head snaps up to look at Sylvain, ruining his attempts to appear disinterested, but his face is unreadable. Annette’s face falls a little, too, but it’s only a moment before she rallies. “That’s all right,” she says, and she sounds determined. She’s small, but there’s steel in that spine. “There is alway a cost. I’d still rather know.” It’s a lovely sentiment, but naive. She might think that, but she hadn’t seen that poor woman’s face when she uncorked the vial only to be forced to her knees by the familiar scent of a lifelong friend who had died suddenly the year before. The utter devastation of certainty. The devastation of finding out that a horrific loss you thought you had known the edges of was even larger than you had realized. That there was nothing that could be done, and so much less to look forward to. She was young and she had aged in an instant, right before his eyes. Sylvain sighs. The next part isn’t super fun, either. “I’m gonna level with you, yeah?” He looks her in the eye, unsubtly gestures toward the man she came with. “You guys seem like a sweet couple,” he says with a lightness he doesn’t feel. “If you’re happy together, isn’t that enough?" If there’s one thing Sylvain will never understand, it’s having something good and risking its destruction just to find out if it’s perfect. Sylvain very intentionally does not think of names and faces, of soft looks and desperate kisses and promises to never ask one, specific thing of him. He does not think of being told that he is enough and the stubborn, stupid hope that roared to life each time. He does not think about how it only ever ended one way. The allure of certainty is too great, and people are greedy. Sylvain, with his ever-growing list of flaws and increasingly empty smile, has never been enough. In the end, they always ask. And at some point you get tired of showing the people you love that you’re not actually the one they want. In retrospect, perhaps sales pitch is the wrong term, considering how much of it consists of Sylvain actively trying to talk people out of commissioning him. The point is, accidentally breaking up cute couples is probably his least favorite workplace hazard.

I didn't finish it in time, but here's a bit of what I've been working on for day 2: magic (1/3) #sylvixweek #wip
Sylvain looks up from where he’s been halfheartedly fooling around on his phone when the bell above the door jingles. He spares a glance at his latest uninspiring Tinder match, some shapeshifter with a cute smile but an extremely unimaginative bio. Eh. He swipes right anyway, before swiftly locking his phone and slipping it into his pocket. Two people stumble into Sylvain’s small—sorry, ”charmingly intimate”—storefront. A tiny, adorable redhead is resolutely shoving a grumpy-looking man through the door frame. The man is clearly fit in that slim and wiry way Sylvain may be slightly weak for, and the girl couldn’t weigh more than a hundred pounds soaking wet, but he seems utterly resigned to allowing her to cheerfully manhandle him anyway. Something about it reminds Sylvain of this one video he saw of a little girl aggressively cuddling a clearly miserable cat. It had this thousand yard stare, like it fully understood and accepted the futility of struggling against such intense, unavoidable love. Sylvain snorts, just a little. The man dodges away from her hands once she’s forced him all the way inside, which almost causes her to over balance and fall flat on her face. The man’s eyes widen and he darts forward to steady her. “Be careful for once, Annette,“ he snaps in an utterly toothless way. She just laughs, reaching up to affectionately poke him in the cheek. The man’s hair is long, pulled back in a messy bun. Sylvain idly wonders what it might look like down. At this point, the girl—Annette?—seems to remember that Sylvain is there and, yes, absolutely saw all of that. She turns toward him, a little flushed. It doesn’t dim her megawatt smile at all. “Hello,” she chirps, confidently approaching the counter. The man hangs back, resolutely looking anywhere but at Sylvain. They’re a cute couple, and something inside of him pangs distantly. He hopes this doesn’t go the way he expects it to. “Welcome in, what can I do for you today?” Sylvain asks, as though people ever come in for more than one, very specific thing. The truth is that, while Sylvain is a competent alchemist and potion-maker with a broad range of abilities, there’s really only one reason people seek him out nowadays. Sylvain’s taken advantage of it, of course, because he’s nothing if not good at seizing an opportunity to market himself, especially in the wake of his messy disinheritance. Still, it’s always felt a little cheap. He wonders what all of those years of study and apprenticeships were for, when the thing that actually pays his bills is the stupid, borderline useless gift he just happened to be born with. “Is—is it true? That you can do Fate magic?” The girl blurts out, almost vibrating in excitement. Sylvain feels his smile slide a little closer to sincere in the face of her obvious enthusiasm, even though it’s about fifteen minutes to closing and his favorite drama comes on in half an hour. “Yep! That’s what they tell me, anyway,” he quips, absently scratching the back of his neck. “It’s just the one thing, though.” The man behind her scoffs, but says nothing. Sylvain doesn’t take it personally. It’s not like you can find someone who does Fate magic on every corner—it’s notoriously rare and finicky, and there’s no shortage of scammers ready to take advantage of the lonely and desperate in search of true love. But while Sylvain’s gift may be... niche, to say the least, it’s definitely the real deal. “That’s amazing, though! I can’t do anything that cool,” she exclaims, palms clasped to her chest. Sylvain isn’t sure he quite believes that when he feels the compliment shiver down his spine like a physical thing. There’s something there, but it takes a second for him to place the feeling. Ah, he thinks, Empathic Voice. “Can you do it for me?” She asks, jarring Sylvain out of his thoughts. Her eyes are wide and bright and sincere. Those eyes are weapons of mass destruction; Sylvain suddenly feels like he understands the guy still lurking behind her a little better.
