Maker of things. Consumer of things. Dad of things.
FWIW, on reddit there was a thread where multiple people who reported having been in the group said it was *real bad*

I'm a big fan of the Dune Encyclopedia, which is written as an in-universe text by dozens of different contributing writers with Frank Herbert's blessing and review.

Far more entertaining than any of the official Dune prequels written since his death.

That was lovely - getting some real Pratchetty vibes from it.

PS "No leave us alone" should be "Now leave us alone"

As great as that speech is (and it's truly wonderful), I think Fiona Shaw's speech from the finale tops it.

I have ordered a 'shurt' shirt and am very excited for it.

Now people will no longer be confused by what I'm wearing, only by how it is spelled.

Would love to see it - it'd be an amazing way for him to finish out his career, but I'm not holding out a lot of hope.

One of the great things about having kids is getting to watch movies like this with them and see it through their eyes as they watch it for the first time.

They love Totoro and Kiki's Delivery Service (they were less keen on Ponyo).

Oh, and 'Cider House Rules' by John Irving (not my favourite Irving book, that'd be 'A Prayer for Owen Meany', but definitely his Great Noveliest), and 'The Secret History' by Donna Tartt

Not sure if 'Lolita' by Nabakov or 'A Confederacy of Dunces' by Toole make most lists but I'd put them up there, plus 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas' by Thompson as one of the epitomes of New Journalism. And don't sleep on the standard lists - books like 'The Great Gatsby' are there for a reason.

Great to see him breaking that cycle

Not just considering it - at this stage pretty much every subreddit I'm on has banned links to twitter.

The only ones still thinking about it are the sports ones, because most sports journos are only on twitter and only posting screenshots rather than direct links too means verification is harder.

For me this is one best appreciated as an image (or maybe a series of images over time), rather than in person...

Do you find it mildly and irrationally annoying that you didn't quite manage 20 in 20 years?

Wow, you pretty much *are* the piece - that's very cool, and you make a lot of great points.

Did they reach out to you?

I've always been a big proponent of separating art you love from the artists who create it, and so I've been able weather recent events without too much trauma.

But I swear, if it ever turns out that Terry Pratchett isn't the perfect humanist philosopher I envisage in my head I'm going to lose it.

There is no death. There is only Oprah.

That's a fun series, though I actually liked it from book 1. Looking forward to the final book.

Other series that I think get much better after the initial book or two:
* The Colour of Magic,Terry Pratchett
* Storm Front, Jim Butcher
* Consider Phlebas, Iain M. Banks
* Starborn, Lucy Hounsom

As a fan of Sandman and his novels that Vulture article sure was a rough read...

Yes, in particular Look To Windward, though other Culture books that focus on the human protagonists like The Player Of Games are also very relevant.

Did you keep the receipt?

I think Hunter S Thompson would probably be a good fit for that category too.

Oh, damn, there's a new Southern Reach book? Wasn't expecting that.

Loved the original trilogy, though it seemed very complete - not by any means that it answered all of the many unanswered questions it raised, but that I left it feeling very satisfied and not looking for further answers.
