They would have done better to just make another epic set in Ancient Rome and have it be a stand alone film. Do it like Scorcese did with gangster movies. But I'm not even sure that would have saved it.

All of the easter eggs and allusions to the original movie are a testament to that. The best parts of the movie were desperate calls out to the original as if to say "hey look, remember that pretty good movie we made twenty years ago?" It was kind of sad, now that I think of it.

Some of the dialogue was pretty good, so were most of the performances; and, as is typical of Ridley Scott films, it looked great. But in the end, it reminded me of a younger sibling trying to live up to their elder sibling's reputation and falling flat on their face.

I'm a world builder who is creating a fictional world with a very Gothic/late 19th century aesthetic. Sounds like we have some things in common. :)
