As I became aware of trans issues, I was inclined to be sympathetic. Later, I became friends with trans people found negative narratives about them to be unfair and dishonest. I’m also naturally sympathetic to people on the margins, having experience with being mistreated for not conforming.

I was an unathletic fat kid and teenager who did theater, and I was a big nerd. I got bullied for being gay a lot. The fact that I wasn’t gay made me pretty skeptical of the judgement of people with those prejudices, and I also understood that even if I was gay I wouldn’t deserve their treatment.

I loved the performances on that show, but it made me feel genuine reverence for Michael Mckean. The career that guy has had, and the level of work he does there is really astounding.
