Reunite Families UK (RFUK) is a lived experience non profit organisation supporting and advocating for people affected by UK spouse migration policy which is one of the harshest in the world

We oppose this proposal loudly and unapologetically.

We demand a migration system rooted in dignity, not deterrence.

Recognising our shared humanity isn’t radical — it’s the bare minimum.

We will not be silent while families are torn apart.

Our families are not a political prop.

We refuse to be scapegoats for:

▶️ housing shortages,
▶️ NHS waiting lists,
▶️ economic mismanagement.

We call on this government and the members of the previous ones to stop blaming migrants for their failures.

Copying Denmark doesn’t fight the far right.

It copies them. You don’t stop extremists by adopting their ideas — you validate them.

Appeasement has never defeated fascism.

Even @teamlabouruk.bsky.social MPs including @labourlewis.bsky.social are rightly warning that this plan is “immoral” and a “dead end.”

If your own party is sounding the alarm, maybe it’s time to admit the strategy is not bold — it’s desperate.

During COVID, Keir Starmer called migrant workers “key workers,” recognising their role keeping the country running.

Now his government puts their future on hold and ends refugee family reunion.

You can’t praise people one year and scapegoat them the next.

That’s not leadership—it's hypocrisy

These proposals will exponentially increase the number of children growing up only seeing a parent through a screen.
Our research with @wearecoram.bsky.social shows how the UK’s spouse migration policy forces long separations, harming children’s mental health reunitefamiliesuk.co.uk/families-bel...

The UK already has some of the strictest family migration rules in the world that make it extremely hard for couples and children to reunite here.

Our report shows the policy is more akin to punishment.

Why would the govn want to make this even harder? reunitefamiliesuk.co.uk/wp-content/u...

DK’s model is known for one thing: cruelty.

It splits migrant families and blocks refugee family reunion in areas with many “non-Western” residents.

It’s been judged discriminatory and fuels fear, not safety.

The UK is quite literally in a race to the bottom when it comes to migration.

The UK already has some of the harshest family migration rules—and now it’s reportedly looking at Denmark, ranked the worst in the world. How is this fighting the far right, it’s appeasing them. Our families deserve dignity, not scapegoating. www.aljazeera.com/news/2025/11...

This joint statement coordinated by @rfuk.bsky.social and @jcwi-uk.bsky.social has been signed by over 60 organisations.

We call on the government to reverse this heartless decision and reinstate the right to family reunion. ✊🏽

The government has shut down refugee family reunion — turning in effect a “temporary pause” into a permanent ban.

Cruel. Heartless. Inhumane. 🧵

Politics shouldn’t be a game of appeasing the far right. Yet yesterday’s Labour Conference speech by the Home Secretary was another example of policies designed to mirror their rhetoric. reunitefamiliesuk.co.uk/rfuk-respond...

Great to see so many MPs at the Debate on the Government's plans to extend the length of the route to settlement.

We urge the Government to consider these alternatives:

1️⃣ DO NOT increase the length of the route to settlement:
2️⃣ Scrap the exorbitant visa and health surcharge fees
3️⃣ Scrap the MIR

The immigration system causes poverty in those unfortunate enough to deal with it. They need to pay every year £1000s in visa and health surcharge fees and endure being continuously told that they are a burden on the state. These graphs shows migrants are good business for the state's coffers

There are no winners in the UK's immigration system:

1️⃣ Couples and families are either separated or in poverty
2️⃣ Children suffer every day
3️⃣ The country loses diversity and valuable skills
4️⃣ Our society becomes poorer

We need change !

More children have remained without one of their parents, stuck abroad because their British or settled partner can't meet the increasingly strict requirements of the spouse visa.
From our and @wearecoram.bsky.social research we know full well how children suffer at the hand of this policy:

The N of spouse visas applications decreased by nearly a quarter than the previous year. Yet behind each application not made or granted is a story of a couple or family that split up, remained exiled or separated because they couldn't meet the new £29,000 MIR.

there is such low understanding of this issue. This contributes to feelings of isolation within the experience.

So – what can help with these feelings?
August 18, 2025 at 3:57 PM
Because they’re separated from a partner; because they’re working so hard to meet the fees and rules that they’re not able to spend time socialising or making new friends.

On top of this, other people often don’t understand the rules and so it can be hard to relate to friends and relatives:

Loneliness and isolation are common challenges in the modern world, and people navigating the spouse and partner migration rules are especially likely to experience them.

Through our research, we spoke to many people who feel lonely, who feel isolated – because they’re apart from friends and family

When our mind focuses on the future, it often tries to control numerous uncontrollable aspects. By releasing control and accepting this, emotions like sadness, anger, or frustration may surface.Let us know what has worked or is working for you! #RFUKWellbeing

Facing significant life events and forces beyond your control can lead to anxiety, worry, and overthinking. The spouse and partner visa process is especially stressful, involving concerns about money, relationships, loved ones' wellbeing, and the future, overwhelming the mind.

People struggle to find hope amid political and social turmoil, separation from loved ones, and stress even when together. This uncertain future impacts families, relatives abroad, and those living between two cultures. We will initially focus on anxiety, worry, and overthinking

Thank you to everyone who completed the wellbeing survey You told us the visa process is stressful and deeply affects you, with common experiences of anxiety, depression, financial stress, and loneliness. If you’ve felt these, you’re not alone; they are widespread on this journey 🧵
