ISmall story on this: I chit-chat with a school employee who is deep in MAGA conspiracies. Today, he brought up how the 50-year mortgage is just slavery and complete bullshit. I have the feeling that this is going to sour more people on the GOP than the cult leaders think.

The $0 deductibles and copays have been tried in other countries. After many years, the general consensus there was that it led to an overconsumption of medical resources, and governments then had to increase the deductibles to moderate, but non-zero values - which was very hard, politically.

Sorry to hear that. Taking care of parents while they've regressed to toddlers is the worst. Only advice I have is to get professional help for them. Medicare may pay for some of it.

No, but they want the rest of their base to believe that.

If Captain Vimes hadn't already proposed his economic theory of boots, we could call it Scalzi's theory of meat storage. Though there's no shame in being bested by Pratchett.

I didn't mean to imply anything. My question is literally that, and one just out of curiosity. I understand Trump & Miller want to provoke violence, so I understand the need for care. So where would you draw it? I also understand if that is not something you'd want to discuss in public.
September 29, 2025 at 10:26 PM
A baseline question for you: is violence for you ever acceptable? If not, how do you propose to solve the issue of someone unilaterally trying to exterminate you? If yes, where is that line? Just trying to gauge your thought process here.

Someone please explain when voters were absolved of the responsibility of how they vote? The entire point of voting was that people could voice their opinion on who should lead the country and how. If it is the responsibility of politicians to find votes, we are a managed democracy - i.e., Russia.

Right now, Russia has the vast majority of its assets tied up in Ukraine. Is that still going to be the case in a year? Two years? How long will Europe need to ramp up? One year? More than two years? If Russia overplays its hand, it may be better it does so now than later.
September 23, 2025 at 4:19 PM
To echo Janne's point, there are two timelines at work that influence whether now is a better time to respond than later: Europe's ability to ramp up and Russia's ability to free up resources from the war in Ukraine. Europe will definitely benefit from more time, but Russia may benefit even more so.

Because every organization that is not under direct control of the ruling party is a threat to it, and must therefore be eliminated. Dictatorship 101.

In this case, actual confirmation would involve the doctors who are treating him. No one else.

What are the odds that this was a test flight that normally ends at a fully controlled test site? It would explain why 3 1T warheads were aimed at a rather bland FSB base. It would also mean that the missile is understood to need improvements, with the question being what improvements need focus.

So no one in Europe thinks that Trump could implement Putin's rumored demands that the US imposes sanctions on Europe and Ukraine if Zelenskyy rejects Putin's next proposal? It's not likely, granted, but it would be very effective. Any insight on how European politicians look at these sanctions?

I'm sure you understand how in corporations, owners, CEOs and their lieutenants do not have to do everything directly in order to shape all behaviors there. For an academic review, maybe start here: trace.tennessee.edu/cgi/viewcont...

Until you understand the mechanics of a first-past-the-post system, you may want to work a bit more with people who do on how to improve democracy in the US, and not just wing it.
July 6, 2025 at 4:49 AM
Do you understand why, in a lot of democracies, smaller parties combine into larger parties until they can do more than just get on the ballot? And how that any democracy that uses first-past-the-post voting systems exacerbates that system until only two viable parties exist?
