I think there's an argument to be made for a predecessor of "recession pop" to have emerged in the late 80s/early 90s. Just as Reaganomics was really starting to hurt the economy was when 80s dance pop/hair metal was hitting its stride, and a lotta newcomers to those genres were all about the party
