really don’t get why none of them are afraid of lawsuits. civil rights law is still on the books. all these black people and women getting disproportionately fired while their bosses publicly talk anti-DEI bs
have grounds to sue. did they lose their compliance departments when they fired ethics?

also people in those professions must use human judgment all the time about secrets - many traditions require that clergy not keep the seal of confession in cases of abuse of children or vulnerable adults or intended harm to any. from what we are seeing LLMs not capable of that kind of discernment.

if we do, might come from most impacted locals - seen city and state reps in Chicago get radical real fast as conditions otg get bad. they’re risking arrest, confronting harm directly, starting food pantries at offices. feels different and good. doesn’t feel like senators, governors really get it.

Seems like a mirror of the brave juries/collaborator Ivy admins divide - the closer a publication is to having to please actual people, the more it will reflect abundant anti-Trump responses. NYT still cares more about elite reception than broad consumer sentiment, even its own. People does not.

Broadview PD has usually tried to be pretty hands off and just let protests happen, although there are exceptions where they have overreached - it’s Illinois State Police sent by the Governor that habe done the majority of the arrests and brutalizing

My impression being there is it’s a lot dumber than that, they are frustrated by how many religious protests there have been and how much attention they have garnered and decided to see if saying “nuh uh!!!!” would stop us. They will find out that it will not.

For many “a Muslim has civic power” is the actual nightmare they fear and it will continue to be true, so no, they won’t walk it back. They say hyperbolic nonsense to justify their extreme emotional response to simple multiracial democracy, but will continue to be scandalized by it in any form.

Even incredibly conservative Catholics are historically pro-immigrant. It’s deep in the faith but also in the lived practice - most people’s formative Catholic communities were ethnicity based and immigrant founded and even most US born Catholics at this point have had a Priest born elsewhere

reportedly did this with Broadview protestors early on as well - detained them steps away at BV then drove them miles for the sole purpose of releasing them in an unfamiliar location

That is an explanation for getting the tattoo. Nothing can explain revealing the tattoo without sharing a plan to remove or cover immediately, and without verbalizing understanding of why Nazism is bad. Boneheaded judgment from this month, and not so easy to explain away.

American car companies should know that there are certain makes and models that my neighbors and I will now never see again without thinking of kidnappers. Something for them to consider!

Isn’t this just The Lost Cause with more compelling visuals? Think the prediction is right but don’t know that the social phenomenon itself is new or surprising, simply expressed through new forms of media. Confederate statues built in the early 20th century served a similar function.

something there about modern democracies’ complicated relationship to “merit” - part of saint like role is sport as one of few remaining sources of broad collective effervescence, but also having closer claim to meritocracy than any other by how skill is clearly defined and visible to spectators

they cut off traffic multiple blocks either way for many of the protests, literally who would hit the protestors except ICE or the state and local police themselves?? there is a traffic light right there people would use to cross if they weren’t prevented from doing so by local police??

incredibly moving to watch the rapid response groups learn the schedules of local churches and show up to escort at risk people home and to vehicles for safety. rogers park has a lot of suffering right now and also an extraordinary amount of people showing up in profound community.

Vast majority truly, truly don’t care, want to be community to who shows up. People change, you expect congregants will go through a whole variety of beliefs and lives while they’re connected, why wouldn’t one of those stages be “no God” or “maybe God” or ”I’m just here for the people.” Go for it!

some forget that being racist, sexist, etc. means you constantly and wildly underestimate your opposition. falsely believing you are inherently superior to others will have you making a lot of very bad strategic decisions regarding your ability to take them on.

the ineptitude seems required by the flaws in their conception of power. they only believe in power as dominator-dominated enforced by violence, and it turns out there are real limits to that (like, the pesky ‘dominated’ continuing to act and talk and coordinate all the time)

the strategic misread is one thing - harder for me to understand ignoring current regime violence. in Chicago ICE has murdered someone, kidnapped children, tear-gassed near daycares. where do they fit in to compromising “to avoid violence”? is the idea to sacrifice them to save pundit lives?
