A walk through my neighborhood a few days ago and ran into an eternal truth in a bit of an unlikely place: “Presidents are temporary. Wu-Tang is forever.”

I know there’s a whole world on fire out there. It’s still a good time for me to tell you - we don’t do blue jolly ranchers around here. Don’t even have support groups for folks kicking the habit. As per Harriet Tubman’s email, we’re just leaving you behind.

Spent some time with my college roomie and Soror last week. A prayer of gratitude before I go to sleep.

For strength showing up in softness. For joy defying despair. Defying! For the sacred friendship of Black women - laughing through grief, dreaming, still…

I give God thanks.

I can’t delete names from my address book and here’s why: GRIEF SUCKS. My congregation lost so many people to COVID in the first year of the pandemic. Enough to fill two sections of the sanctuary’s balcony. Their voices, stories, laughter, love….

Also on this day, December 24, 1854 - Harriet Tubman sent a message to her bothers that the good old ship of Zion was on the way….and she snuck in and led them to freedom. (BTW I imagine her gearing her brothers were to be sold south, saying - I think TF NOT!)

Turn folk against each other using focus-grouped emotional/wedge issues. The border! The babies! The DEI! Buy the media. The right fights the left. The middle class blames the poor. These guys walk off with the people’s safe, the people’s democracy, and the children’s future./1

Our last public presentation of Handel’s MESSIAH was in 2019. The community came out in force tonight for its return. A woman said - “we needed this! It’s life-giving.” I keep watching this intermission video because - it’s nothing. And everything. Making friends. Laughter. Being human. Together.

Black women asked folk to go on record back in 1919; and folk keep revealing where they stand with respect to protecting the voices, bodies, and rights of all persons.

Just one of the many, many reasons you are witnessing Black women tapping out. It’s been 1850 in America for Black people for a billion years. And it’s been 1918 in America for Black women since emancipation.

I love black and white photographs. Saw these at the Library of Congress as a part of their “Joy and Sorrow” theme. And I’m only gonna post the joy because reasons….
