Question re: the dock - The coolest feature on the PS1 (imo) was using physical CDs to summon monsters in Monster Rancher. Will the dock support this feature?

A simple solution to avoid the mandatory additional button press is to assign a separate button prompt to open Game Hub. Hover over a game and press X or hold A to open the Hub.
