16 November 1811 John Bright was born in Rochdale. MP for Manchester and later Birmingham, he was anti-slavery, anti-war and an advocate of free trade. His statue stands in Albert Square Manchester.

15 November 1757 Food shortages and high prices led to a riot (the Shudehill Fight) in Manchester. Rioters attacked soldiers with stones, killing one. The troops fired, killing three rioters and leaving more wounded.

This week 1821 eccentric Rev Joshua Brookes died. He performed mass baptisms and marriages at what is now @mancathedral.bsky.social during Manchester's industrial boom. As described in novel The Manchester Man, he is said to have paused burial services to fetch sweets with ‘a child’s love for toffy'

13 November 1986 The Abraham Lincoln statue was unveiled at Lincoln Square, Manchester. Lincoln had praised Mancunians for their support in the American Civil War and sent relief during the resulting Cotton Famine.

12 November 1865 Elizabeth Gaskell died. Her novels sympathetically portrayed the lives of workers in industrial Manchester. She enjoyed travel, socialising, food. On evenings out in Paris she would ‘make a buzz of talk, look at fine dresses, and I come home hungry as a hawk about one am’.

11 November 1913 In the early hours, a bomb destroyed the cactus house at Alexandra Park Manchester, planted by Suffragette Kitty Marion. This was part of an escalating, violent campaign of bombs, arson, and chemical attacks, by the WSPU under the direction of Christabel Pankhurst.

9 November 1909 Architect Thomas Worthington died. His Manchester works include the Albert Memorial in the centre of Albert Square, Minshull St Courts, Memorial Hall (pictured). His designs for Manchester Town Hall were rejected in favour of those by Alfred Waterhouse.

5 November 1980 Manchester was declared a Nuclear Free City and was subsequently joined by others to form Nuclear Free Local Authorities. Manchester City Council formally supports the International Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, in force from 22 January 2021.

4 November 1868 A celebration at the Free Trade Hall marked the anniversary of Manchester adopting the Saturday half-day holiday (1843) in a deal brokered by William Marsden and other members of Manchester Athenaeum. Marsden is buried at St John’s Gardens.

29 October 1851 The furniture and decorations used during Queen Victoria's visit to Manchester were sold at a £472 loss. The Queen had observed ‘the order and the good behaviour of the people… were the most complete we have seen in our many progresses through capitals and cities’.
