Very true what you say about context actually - and also the intended audience I find.

Brilliant presentation, Jan! Its amazing how often these basic concepts are overlooked!

Truth be told, I am guilty of using short-hands for million (M) and billion (B) next to each other without regard to just how different they really are 👀

We can dream.

I see what you mean. They’ve clearly been preparing for this but it still feels a little… personal — the way the response is written.

Added to my reading list. All publicity… as they say!

X's relative value as a social network will continue to decline as anti-user design decisions by #elonmusk push more & more users down the migration pipeline.

#socialmedia should not be the play thing of the rich. Spaces like #Bluesky remind us & them that we—users—are what give platforms meaning.
March 10, 2025 at 5:08 PM
The point at which alternative micro-blogging platforms, like Bluesky Social or Mastodon, reach sufficient scale and value, the network effect will take over; this time, in their favour.

This isn't to say X is resigned to history (yet)...

So—thinking about users' hierarchy of needs—what would it take for those private users on X who are willing to compromise on good user experience in order to maintain their social web on X to leave that platform?

The very same force that keeps them there today: network effects.
March 10, 2025 at 5:01 PM
Today, users are less willing to compromise on #userexperience in a time when trust in centralised platforms like X and Facebook is declining due to misaligned values, heightened scrutiny of #privacy cultures, and seemingly anti-user design decisions.
March 10, 2025 at 4:57 PM
As such, the #userexperience —typically a more negotiable need, so long as users have access to a high-value network with the accounts they want to follow—has suffered.

Think: the manipulation of algorithms to amplify far-right messages, relaxed content and ad moderation, and creeping paywalls.
March 10, 2025 at 4:57 PM
This has been achieved through:

🌐 the power the #networkeffect;
⛓️‍💥 the suppression of #interoperability; &
📈 the aggressive acquisition of emerging rivals.
March 10, 2025 at 4:56 PM
Now, more than ever, it is critical to understand what drives user churn.

Why? Because in doing so, we unearth the hidden truth behind the social media status quo—that users of #centralized networks have been consciously denied choice as digital agents.
March 10, 2025 at 4:54 PM
In this time of change and uncertainty, we see users:

💡 Re-evaluate their needs when it comes to social networking;

⚙️ Adjust their attitudes towards platforms that fail to meet those needs; &,

✊ Exercising their 'consumer power' by abandoning platforms that fail to or no longer meet their needs.
