This was a sketch where I was hoping to mimic the color choices of one of my favorite artists, to see if that might jolt me to some greater understanding.

Rain again.

For #FlashbackFriday, it's #MTGinktober 78, "Drain," starring Blood Artist painting a self portrait of his idealized form, Zulaport Cutthroat, but it comes out as Thief of Hope. This has perhaps every drainer in #MTG as of 2018, as draining used to be my favorite mechanic before Cat-Oven ruined it.

Finding my people.
Finding my community.

All right, back to the regularly scheduled #TBT of #MTG illustrations of yore till we get to 299. This is our 77th #MTGinktober illustration--2018's 20th piece--"Breakable," starring whatever the heck is going on in Phyrexian Unlife. I had completely forgotten I'd drawn this, so it jolted even me.

I just learned you can customize your Firefox background, so I'm trying this out & it's kinda nice. Once I pick a BG, avatar, etc. it tends to stay that way forever, so we'll see how many years this guy lasts. Maybe I should make something custom for it. But for now, we'll give Bushidobot a shot.

Maybe next year's your year, Didi.

I discovered some Canadian postcards in my desk one day, so I drew some pictures on them for the kids.

While the previous one could pass as a finished illustration--which it isn't--this is a lot more of a WIP, though the lines are looking about finished at least on the main figure; there's still the background to contend with, but anyway, here's the other WIP I was working on before diving into inks.

I was curious what the last WIP was I working on before Inktober started, & it looks like it was this. The tricky thing is trying to apply the techniques & flow I hone during October into my regular stuff. I just get total amnesia, & have to relearn everything. I did take notes this year, though.

And then the last little highlight from ten years of #MTGinktober, I loved doing parody illustrations every run. So many things have inspired me over the years, it was great to have an avenue to salute them directly. Some were as subtle as a mimicked gesture, but some got to be pretty straight-up.

If anyone’s planning on sneakily dipping out early to start the weekend, she won’t tell. *wink*

Looking back at ten years of #MTGinktober, the number one thing I'll miss is thinking up different adventures these characters could plausibly go on. I loved the research portion of each day, where I'd sift through thousands of cards to figure out who might interact with who for the prompt and how.

And while looking back at ten years of #MTGinktober, honorable mention to Thalia, Guardian of Thraben, who I greatly looked forward to drawing whenever I could, but she only made seven appearances, just missing the top three. She ended up teaming up with The Gitrog Monster a lot, which was amusing.

Closing out our top three, looking back at the past ten years of #MTGinktober, is Ghoulcaller Gisa Cecani, with nine total appearances. She's been in the line-up since Year One, and is a fun draw because she seems a bit insane with a normal streak, which makes for great narratives to illustrate.

Our second-most illustrated character in ten years of #MTGinktober was Liliana with twelve appearances. She has the advantage, like Chandra, of having distinct eras, so she's almost three characters at once. Her kid version counted for six of those appearances and Professor Onyx for three.
November 4, 2025 at 3:13 AM
I am still going through and tabulating various things for a more in-depth retrospective, but after 10 years of #MTGinktober, I was curious which character I drew the most. As I suspected, it was Chandra, who takes the top spot at sixteen appearances, which is four more than her nearest competitor.

Here's #MTG + #inktober = #MTGinktober, starring everybody.

It's been ten years and I count 299 illustrations, so we'll call it there.

Thanks so much to anyone for tuning in over the years, it's really meant a lot. I'll post more in-depth reflections on the complete run on Blogspot.

Insubordinate. And churlish.
