4️⃣ The BBC is the only online news provider in the UK more widely used as a source of online news than search engines and social media, which are increasingly important and popular ways for people to find and access online news
November 10, 2025 at 5:07 PM
3️⃣ While widely used, the BBC has lower reach among younger people and people with more limited formal education. Like other news organisations, its news audience tends to skew towards older people and those with higher levels of education
November 10, 2025 at 5:07 PM
2️⃣ The BBC is one of the most trusted news brands in the UK, with 60% saying they trust it. The BBC is slightly more trusted by centrist and leftist Brits (67%) than by people who identify with the political right (47%). But it's still more trusted within the right than right-leaning newspapers
November 10, 2025 at 5:07 PM
1️⃣ The BBC is by far the most widely used source of news in the UK both online and offline, and it is more widely used as a source of news than many public service media around Europe. It is also the most popular source of news among both Conservative and Labour voters
November 10, 2025 at 5:07 PM
As the BBC faces fresh scrutiny, what does our research say about it?

Our report on news creators identifies the top 15 news influencers in 24 countries

The UK list includes right-wing and left-wing commentators, TV news anchors (Robert Peston, Andrew Neil) and people doing explainers. Joe Rogan sits at the top and Nigel Farage is #10

The only woman is Beth Rigby

Finally, politicians are also frequently mentioned by respondents in the context of news sources on social media and have significant followings. Many politicians are also content creators who shape public debates. Some content creators have become politicians, and vice versa.

Here we find a broad range of creators. Some of these rarely talk about news and politics, but the size of their audience, which is often larger than those in the first section, and the trust and authenticity that they have built up, can still have a powerful impact in political debates

This typology covers those news creators focusing on hard news. But the report also addresses individuals touching on news-adjacent topics, such as entertainment, religion or science

Our new report provides a typology of news creators, based on analysis of 24 countries

The report, by Nic Newman, @amyrossarguedas.bsky.social @mitalilive.bsky.social @richardfletcher.bsky.social, makes a distinction between those who focus on hard news and those touching news-adjacent topics

6️⃣ YouTube is the most important platform for news creators

Video platforms such as YouTube and TikTok tend to be the most important space for creators. There are some country differences, however. Facebook is still an important news platform in parts of Asia and Africa, and X matters in the US
October 28, 2025 at 7:48 AM
5️⃣ Creator consumption is primarily national, but US creators have a huge influence elsewhere

Attention is often focused on domestic creators, but US right-leaning commentators, such as Joe Rogan and Ben Shapiro, are popular in other countries. Both Elon Musk and Donald Trump are on the US list
October 28, 2025 at 7:48 AM
4️⃣ It's not just gender: age matters too

When it comes to age, around half of Under-35s (48%) who use social media say they consume news from creators while older people are more likely to pay attention to mainstream media brands
October 28, 2025 at 7:48 AM
3️⃣ Most of the top news creators are men

Across 24 countries we find that 85% of the top 15 in each country are men. In Canada there is not a single woman among the top 15. The Philippines, a country with a history of prominent female journalists, has the lowest proportion of men (46%) in the list
October 28, 2025 at 7:48 AM
2️⃣ A few names stand head and shoulders above the rest

These include commentators such as Joe Rogan and Tucker Carlson in the US, but also popular ‘infotainers’ such as Leo Dias in Brazil, and creators doing explainers such as Dylan Page in the UK. But most news creators lie in the long tail
October 28, 2025 at 7:48 AM
1️⃣ Creators are not having the same impact in every country

They are especially impactful in Brazil, Mexico, Indonesia, Thailand, Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa and the United States. By contrast creators are playing a smaller role in Japan and in most European countries
October 28, 2025 at 7:48 AM

8️⃣ How will AI change the news?

As with last year, many assume AI will make news cheaper to produce (+39 point net difference) and more up to date (+22), but less transparent (−8) and less trustworthy (−19). People in Japan and Argentina are more positive and people in the UK more negative
