"'Long I fell, and he fell with me. His fire was about me. I was burned...Ever he clutched me, and ever I hewed him, till at last he fled... I threw down my enemy, and he fell from the high place and broke the mountain-side where he smote it in his ruin.

Thrilled that we were able to bring this extraordinary writer to Nicholls for the Fletcher Lecture Series. I've taught Sarah Broom's The Yellow House many times in my Creative Nonfiction course, and it routinely dazzles my students.

It's been an issue for years, but we don't have the money for a permanent repair or enough staff to keep up with the maintenance properly.

Here's me five years ago, in a photo I sent to the dean.

I usually cover the exposed floor with three indoor/outdoor rugs from Lowe's, purchased at my expense.

Thanks at least in part to austerity budgets and deferred maintenance, my (second floor!) office has flooded. Again.
The pampered life of a literature professor.

Again: up yours forever, Bobby Jindal and vandals in the Louisiana Legislature, for the ongoing defunding of public higher education.

Which one of you bootlicking bastards finally ratted out Comrade Marina?

I was showing clips from Star Wars Ep. IV in my Mythology class this afternoon. My selection included the scene when Imperial Stormtroopers stop Luke and Ben at a checkpoint on their entry to Mos Eisely.

"Well, there's ICE," I blurted out, to a chorus of "OOOOOO!" and uproarious laughter. (1/2)

Also, each time I see a photo of Case, for a split second I think it's a photo of a colleague in comparative literature or critical theory, a fellow associate professor somewhere. Without fail.

Because I have Amanda Shires's gorgeous "Nobody's Girl" and Neko Case's new shredder "Neon Grey Midnight Green" on heavy rotation I'm getting a double helping of heartbreak and hope these days. And that feels perfect, really.

And here's a fellow backpacker's photo of me doing a morning map briefing on our route.

My newspaper this morning. (La Reppublica is center left, you might recall from its sustained criticism of Berlusconi.)

I planted a bunch of native trees from BTNEP around my house last year: honey locusts and yaupon holly, mostly.

All are thriving, but I recently discovered that one of the two holly trees must be male and the other female, because I'm getting berries!

Will be very seasonable at Christmas.

I want one of my kindly great (...) Uncle Henry, who was a college professor who left his teaching post to kick traitorous slaver ass as Brig. Gen. at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, and Cold Harbor. Before getting hooked on opium, kicking, and going back to teaching.

The annual Arabic Music Retreat ended this afternoon. It included master classes, ear training, theory, ensemble work, concerts, impromptu jam sessions.

This year the retreat was more than half Palestinians. And in the face of everything they sang and played music and danced and celebrated hard.

I'm at the Arabic Music Retreat in Massachusetts this week, and this is their excellent COVID policy. I wish more people and institutions took health measures seriously.
