Domestic and some wild horses make up the vast majority of American equines purchased by kill buyers then trucked to Mexican or Canadian slaughterhouses.
But we’re among those that have rescued burros that have ended up at auctions frequented by kill buyers.

The solution: Congress must pass the bipartisan Save America’s Forgotten Equines (SAFE) Act. It would both impose a lasting slaughter ban and shut down the foreign slaughter pipeline.

More than 12,000 horses were shipped to Mexico or Canada to be slaughtered — a 25% increase — through the fast half of this year. Congress has also failed to pass a lasting federal ban on horse slaughter within the United States.

Our American Wild Horse Sanctuary is responsible for nearly 500 rescued wild horses and burros. We do our best to give them back some of the freedom taken away from them in government roundups.
