Welcome to Retro Night, spotlighting a different title from 199X every weekend. You're invited to play along. Games roll over on Friday.
Heroes Inc.

I was locked-in on this thing. Pixels (2015) did something similar, right? Never saw it, but I believe it has some similar imagery, though the narrative might be different. The whole world as a computer is very Douglas Adams.

Kojima chose Aug. 24th, 1964 as the date of the Virtuous Mission because it aligned with his birthday.

I initially bemoaned the fact that I kicked off "Kojima Week" posting about Gex, but it turns out that's Dana Gould's birthday too. Amazing coincidence!

"This is absolutely the last Metal Gear Hideo Kojima is working on."

...and he worked on 11 more.

I think the author guessed this and was making a joke, but it's hard to tell in print.

The NES shaped me, but the 3DO meant the most to me as it was the first console I bought with my own money. I mentioned it on here recently, but I was able to afford the costly 3DO after a retail CEO lost a bet to me, a 12 year old kid. Never bet against a kid's ability to manipulate gains.

His credits weren't wholly apparent in the NES era, but Kojima's notable mark on the industry informed our outside play; walkie-talkies, camouflage, tactical espionage action, and hidden tree forts.

Hideo Kojima became a legendary name on the playground, with a whole grade of kids challenging the notion that we weren't aware of creators back then.

Robert the comic book store guy built a niche legend out of Hideo Kojima in our town in the '80s. His comic shop was in the side room of our local video store, across from the game shelves. If you came in to rent Metal Gear, Robert would certainly tell you about Kojima and the superior MSX version.

Gex was a mainstay for me on my 3DO. Story goes, retail CEO made a bet against me at 12 years old that I couldn't make 3 toothpicks into 4 without breaking any. One "shape-of-a-4" later and I bought the console.

Focus group responses for Millipede. It seems like the focus group must have been asked to compare Millipede against Centipede directly—probably not the best way to collect raw data.

A few years after the Mortal Kombat movie in 1995, Fear Factory appeared on the Test Drive 5 soundtrack, so I was already familiar, but they were a welcome inclusion nonetheless. I won a fair bit of cash betting on this game against my friend.

Green Jellÿ appeared on the Maximum Carnage soundtrack, a big deal for a 16-bit device. A friend of mine is in a band who often opens for Green Jellÿ... I wonder if I could get him to ask Manspeaker to sign my cartridge? 🤔

For nearly 20 years, Naughty Dog was (to me) the mid-company that made Way of the Warrior, a game of such questionable quality that people still consider it to be one of the worst fighting games of all time. The silver lining? White Zombie on the soundtrack.

Road Rash informed my musical tastes for years. Carrie Akre of Hammerbox told me that the band still considers their inclusion in Road Rash to be a tentpole of their career, and they were obviously very celebratory upon hearing the news from their label.
