Like me, I think his first console was the Master System 2 so I always enjoyed anything he wrote about that system as well as sharing his passion for the SMS's first Sonic game in particular. His work felt like the heart of the magazine in general though (Back to the Noughties etc).

Only just saw this, I'm absolutely shocked. Always enjoyed reading his work in RG, so sorry for your loss Darran.

Enjoyed the article, thanks. I got an Alex Kidd SMS2 for my birthday in 1992 and the vast majority of people I knew had one over a NES too. Many happy memories of Sonic, Alex Kidd, Lucky Dime Caper etc. I have one hooked up to my OLED TV via a RetroTINK 4K scaler now and have discovered more gems.

It was the only 5th gen console I had access to (via a friend) but I never really appreciated it fully at the time. It's only now with ODEs and fan-translated games that I've been able to appreciate just how good it is.
