They/Them

Retro gaming and other nonsense. 🕹️
Well, this is neat. Someone made a Nintendo Virtual Boy system to work on the TV with a 3D printed shell, with a crisp RGB display with the ability to change color palette, and not have the power adapter attached to the controller.

This screenshot from "Phantasy Star" (1987) is something I am sure a lot of us have been thinking lately. #based

"MiniMoni. Shakatto Tambourine! Dapyon!" (2002) by Sega is the only PS1 game they DEVELOPED for the system. It uses a motion-control tambourine controller by Sammy much like "Samba de Amigo" (1999) and never left Japan. It recently got translated as well!

Did you know that in "A Nightmare on Elm Street" (1990) for the NES, you were supposed to play as Freddy? It's no wonder this didn't get released, as Nintendo was very anti-violence back in the day. Might have been a better game than what we got.

When you say 'beat em up' of course Konami and Capcom come to mind, but don't sleep on Taito's arcade game "Growl"/"Runark" (1990) where you punch poachers in the face and use bazookas. The animals will also sometimes help you in the violence. SHBOOM!

Forget the Saturn (but don't because it was awesome), or the Dreamcast (seriously, don't), if anything is to blame for the fall of Sega home consoles it's the 32X. What a load of shit that thing was. The CD was so much better.

How good (and unexpected) was Capcom's "Cadillacs and Dinosaurs" (1993) arcade game? Then again, it was a Capcom beat 'em up, so you know it's going to be awesome. If you have not seen the cartoon or read the original "Xenozoic Tales", do so.

On this day in 1992 "Super Adventure Island"/"Takahashi Meijin no Daibouken Jima" was released for the SNES/SFC by Hudson. More or less an upgrade of the 8-bit "Adventure Island" it featured a banger soundtrack by legendary composer Yuzo Koshiro.

The fact that we only got a Russian bootleg Genesis game based on "Adventures of the Gummi Bears" is basically criminal, especially in a world where "Mickey Mouscapade" exists.

"BASED ON A TRUE STORY!"

Yeah, if you wrote it while smoking crack. I remember being absolutely captivated by this ad as a kid, only years later I found out the game is GARBAGE. An RPG, vertical shooter, and fighting game that got it all wrong.

"Attack Animal Gakuen" (1987), translated as "Attack Animal Academy" is a Famicom "Space Harrier" clone and is personally one of my favorites. I love how our hero Nokko changes clothing at every level. Just one girl rescuing another killing ALL the animals.

"Roger Rabbit" (1989) for the Famicom Disk System is another Kemko Disney game that got reskinned when it came to the U.S. as "The Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle". Not that this game was any good but I argue it's better than the one we got.

From Kemco/Seika, "Donald Duck" (1988) for the Famicom would later be reskinned as "Snoopy's Silly Sports Spectacular" (1989) due to licensing issues. Capcom was the one to handle Disney games at the time in the U.S.

#nintendo really tried to market anything. Was this ever really a problem? Were people lending out so many games at one time like a Blockbuster that they needed to keep track?

If you like your SHMUPs more like "Space Harrier" but still want pixelated boobs, might I suggest "Ai no Omochashi: Space Gigolo - Red Cobra" (1995) by Illusion on the PC-98?

Actually, I won't. It's pretty clunky.

When posting about "Battle Mania" earlier, you can't forget the clear inspiration behind it: "Dirty Pair".

And goddamn the Adam Warren run went hard.

Listen, if you want to make a "Star Fox" clone you have to cater to a specific audience. READ: make those animals fuckable. You can't have "FUR" in your title and not cater to furries. Throw in a Krystal-like character and you will PRINT money.

"Bulk Slash" (1997) for the Sega Saturn is a third-person action mecha game. On every stage, a female navigator can be recruited and each one provides their own special abilities.

Japan-only but has been translated, including a voice patch!

I have a strange obsession with "Steam-Heart's" (1994) for the PC-98 (also available on the PC Engine CD and Sega Saturn). I am sure you can figure out why.

All these Vic Tokai posts and I didn't even mention one of their best in "Clash at Demonhead"/"Dengeki - Big Bang!" (1989) for the NES. If any game needs a modern remake it's this one. Vic Tokai still exists, so someone's got to be able to license it.

I guess I would be remiss if I didn't post the American version of the box art for "Battle Mania"/"Trouble Shooter".

Just... oof. Even Mega Man would cringe.
