Surprised that I cannot see any mention of #carersrights day in most UK newspapers even @theguardian.com - I hope I missed it...

Important for people to know their rights but also important for lobbying for new rights for all who are lifelong carers...

Lots of sensible suggestions in this great piece by @danneidle.bsky.social on tax reform. Also highlights the enduring damage of pointless debates on wealth taxes.

More retirement couples might find it useful to consider a joint annuity where the survivor gets 100% of the payment. Can be useful for securing a basic income for both lives.

in response to good piece in FT by Robert Budden on bonds & annuities.

How rising bond yields are boosting annuity buyers
Perhaps more couples should consider joint annuities to secure a portion of their income - and pay 100% survivor benefits.

WIth high rates on offer & changes to IHT treatment of pensions, its not surprising that annuities are making a comeback. Couples might wish to consider joint annuities offering 100% survivor benefits which can be bought with modest income reduction.

Annuities make a comeback as savers look to beat inheritance tax - The Times - August 19
With rates at an all-time high - it's unsurprising that there is an increasing number of people opting in. Here I highlight the value of annuities with 100% joint survivor benefits

Are equities always better in the long run?

John Ralphe's fascinating article in @financialtimes.com suggests that the lack of a cheap guaranteed equity product suggests that equities may not always outperform in the long run.

Invest in the best companies says Simon Edelsten in the @financialtimes.com - I agree but surely it's not that simple. And not entirely decoupled from business location which will continue to play a role in driving business fundamentals & profitability.

@eddavey.libdems.org.uk - good work on carers. Urgent question needed on CA review is taking so long!! Solution - remove the earnings threshold & cancel all investigations. CA is taxable so anyone earning the current threshold will pay income tax.

Dividend payments tend to polarise views of investors - far more than buyback schemes. The great investors, Terry Smith & Warren Buffett are opposed - preferring total return approach..

Warren Buffett described them as a "bad dream" & Terry Smith as "folly". But are dividend payments really so bad? SureIy it depends on what shareholders then do with the funds?

Winter fuel policy - badly timed, badly thought out & bad politics. Ditch means-testing approach, make the allowance taxable & recover around £300-400m from the 8-9 million tax paying pensioners.
