Following the 1978 season, Reynolds was traded to the Houston Astros on December 8, 1978, for pitcher Floyd Bannister. This move ended his short tenure with the Mariners, '78 set the stage for his continued success in Houston, where he’d earn another All-Star nod in 1979.

The 1978 Mariners were a young squad, and Reynolds was part of a roster that included other notable players like Leon Roberts, who led the team with 22 home runs and a .301 average, and Julio Cruz, who stole 59 bases.

Playing shortstop, Reynolds was a steady presence for the Mariners. While specific advanced defensive metrics from 1978 aren’t as detailed as today’s, his reputation as a reliable fielder helped anchor the infield for a team still finding its footing.

Known for his light hitting earlier in his career, Reynolds typically batted near the bottom of the Mariners’ lineup. However, in 1978, his low strikeout rate and ability to advance runners earned him a shift to the second spot in the batting order early in the season.

By the All-Star break, Reynolds was hitting an impressive .306, with three home runs, 29 RBIs, and 27 runs scored. Reynolds was named the Mariners’ sole representative to the 1978 American League All-Star team. This was a significant achievement for a player on a young expansion team that finished the season with a 56-104 record.
