Very excited that my residency research is now published open access (first official pub!). Long story short: IV adipose-derived stromal cells partially REVERSE established pulmonary fibrosis and telomere shortening in bleo-exposed mice, at least in part through miRNA modulation. In summary:
1) BPD is changing post-surfactant and likely highly prevalent
2) It’s kinda like asthma, kinda like COPD, but also probably different
3) We don’t really know how to treat it in adults
4) Adult Congenital Lung Disease should be a thing.

For many, O2 weaned by 2-3 y/o as alveoli undergo ‘catch up growth’. Trajectory thereafter unclear but don’t seem to reach typical peak lung function and w/ accelerated decline (38490231)

Review of pulmonary embryogenesis: Alveolarization begins at 36 weeks GA, continues into young adulthood along w/ pulm microvasculature. Surfactant production starts around week 18-24 but amount and composition changes throughout remainder of gestation (PMID: 28144783)
