I guess if this is what abolishing the carceral state looks like, I'm not really sure what the difference is between doing that and making every single living soul into a one-person carceral state.

So @50501movement.bsky.social is circulating a video of a guy saying candidates "are being paid to be Israel first, to be loyal to the Zionist project and not to their constituents, not to the American people." Which is just a hairs breadth away from saying "Zionist Occupied Government." Not great!

California’s economy is booming, but not for the majority. Since 2005, over 2.5 million Californians living near the poverty line have left the state in search of an affordable home. The economic, racial and cultural fabric of our state is being rapidly eroded. The hard-working families that created our rich economy, that built our roads and cities, and that grow the food to feed California are being displaced at an alarming rate. Long-time residents of historically working-class neighborhoods and communities of color are being put at risk by: • Corporate landlords consolidating ownership of the housing market, driving up the cost of both owning and renting a home. Wall Street landlords are competing with new homeowners by buying up single-family homes, setting rents that gouge residents, displacing seniors and children from their homes, and disrupting families from living near their community, schools and jobs; • Think tanks that promote “Trickle down housing policies” which advocate only building market rate, luxury housing development, and discourage affordable housing creation; • The state opening the door during the foreclosure crisis for real-estate speculator loopholes and handouts which incentivized cash-carrying corporate investors to buy up significant housing stock in predominately low income, communities of color, while denying local residents the opportunity to buy homes in their own communities; • The state passing disastrous laws like Costa Hawkins and Ellis Act that prevent strong rent control and make it easy for Wall Street landlords to evict in order to rent or sell to people with higher incomes; • The state refusing to invest in deeply affordable housing in all parts of California, which contributes to high poverty and puts tenants at risk of abuse by slumlords

Essentially, Chow told Lurie he supported the mayor's upzoning plan, then turned around and spoke at a rally against it. Then said he still "would take the supervisor position if it were offered." (via SF Standard)
He was eyeing Albert Chow, a small business owner and big supporter of the Engardio recall, who got an interview and told Lurie’s team he would support the mayor’s Family Zoning Plan, according to a source familiar with the appointment process. But then Chow showed up at an Oct. 20 City Hall rally opposing the upzoning plan. “Let's plan smarter, not denser for density sake,” Chow said to NIMBY cheers. Chow says he didn’t really know what the composition of the gathering was going to be. “It was a much more progressive crowd there,” he told Power Play. “I didn’t realize that when I accepted [Supervisor Connie Chan’s] offer to go speak.” Chow maintains that he supports Lurie’s zoning plan but wants it to be appropriate for a district comprising mainly single-family homes and is pushing for units with three or four bedrooms, along with parking mandates. “If we’re talking about Family Zoning, then let’s do this for families,” said Chow, adding that he would take the supervisor position if it were offered.

A number of morning-after reviews I’ve seen say that the Democrats had had a great night but still hadn’t addressed their “civil war” — the battle over whether to run “moderates” or “progressives.” Is it a future of Spanbergers or Mamdanis? That doesn’t seem quite right to me. They have a pretty good model: find candidates suited to their constituencies and focus on cost of living issues and opposition to Donald Trump’s autocracy. Full stop. It’s not more complicated than that. That’s your opposition message. To the extent there are big operative questions, they turn on how to use political power to battle encroaching autocracy. At least in the near term that’s separate from the hot-button policy questions that ordinarily divide centrists, liberals and progressive Democrats. Are you ready to reform the Supreme Court, add D.C. and Puerto Rico as states to the union, pass a raft of post-Trump laws to put new armor plating on the weak seams of the republic? Since those are mostly 2029 questions, that simple program outlined above is more than adequate now and for the next year.

Mike Columbo, a lawyer for the plaintiffs, said that California Democrats who drew the maps admit that the maps increase the power of Hispanics. Precedent set by the Supreme Court allows states to draw districts to increase the voting power of a particular racial group, but Columbo said that’s only allowed for a racial minority that is in jeopardy of having its voting power diluted by another group. That’s not the case with Hispanic voters, Columbo said, because they are the largest ethnic group in California. “There is no majority race in California more than Hispanics,” Columbo said. “Hispanics have had fantastic success in electing candidates of their choice.”

The progressive journalist and former Sanders speechwriter David Sirota has been tearing into its supporters for months, framing the battle between Abundance and anti-oligarchy as zero-sum. “Feel like if the Abundance Bros were around during the Gilded Age, they’d tell us the big social problem was that there were too many health rules slowing down production at Chicago meatpacking plants, not the Rockefellers and Carnegies grinding workers into dust,” reads one of his countless anti-Abundance X posts.

Yet both Jewish Insider and CNN have cited an anonymous source suggesting that he’s known what the tattoo represents for longer than he now admits. McDonald, his former political director, wrote on Facebook, “Maybe he didn’t know it when he got it, but he got it years ago and he should have had it covered up because he knows damn well what it means.” In person, I found Platner largely convincing, especially since, aside from a 2013 post asking why Black people tip less than whites, his online history doesn’t suggest he had an interest in race science or reactionary politics. But I also have no reason to doubt the Jewish Insider or CNN reporting. Ultimately, the truth may not matter: Simply having to explain a “Nazi tattoo” is a serious problem. Polls taken right as Platner’s interlinked scandals were breaking showed him way ahead of Mills, but an online survey released last weekend had him trailing Mills by five points, getting 36 percent of the vote to her 41.

What does it even mean to pass a smell test on the substance. Doesn’t getting to the substance of something by definition require more than a smell test.
I've often said that in a political choice where one has to be perfect VS being human (mistakes, past transgressions) most people will choose being human and bristle at the idea you must be perfect. It's why the left loses. But on the substance, Platner passes the smell test.

New York Times reports that it is unclear whether having a federal agency accept money in excess of congressional appropriations "violates a law prohibiting federal agencies from accepting money in excess of congressional appropriations." I guess we'll never know!
The president said today that a donor had given the government $130 million to help pay troops during the government shutdown. He declined to name the donor, but described him as a “patriot” and a personal friend. If evenly distributed, the money would pay only about $100 to each service member. But is not yet clear how the money will be used, or whether the donation violates a law prohibiting federal agencies from accepting money in excess of congressional appropriations.

This is in response to me saying that whether someone receives grace is contingent on how hard they work to earn it, and that regardless anyone who has been even a little Nazi-curious at any point in their lives should be permanently barred from office. People on here will say anything.

Not trying to add to the pile on, but this way of understanding politics is totally mysterious to me. What is the appropriate amount of emotion to dedicate to any given issue and how do we know when that threshold has been met or exceeded.
bluesky is an even weirder place than twitter. does my post say we should repeal Obamacare no does it say that the institutionalist instinct to devote so much emotion to defense of it rather than sympathizing with what it didnt/still has not fixed (for many) is misplaced? yes. and i stand by that
