Ah, I see. Matching strategies are of course different from typeaheads in forms: we do still recommend additional layers of review (preferably human) for automatic matching when a ROR isn't found. Not sure exactly how OpexAlex handles independent scholars.

We strongly discourage systems from *requiring* a ROR ID for organizations, though of course a ROR lookup helps create cleaner data with fewer text strings for organization names ror.readme.io/docs/forms#/...

Hi Tim! Our best practice recommendation for systems implementing ROR is to allow users to enter a text string if there is no ROR ID found, precisely to accommodate independent scholars and researchers whose organizations are not yet in ROR: ror.readme.io/docs/forms#/...
