The UK released their Public Involvement Standards in 2019 In this there are 6 standards which those involved in research are working towards achieving.... Inclusive opportunities - Making PPI opportunities accessible Working together -Valuing all contributions, building relationships Communication - Well-timed, relevant and clear plain language communications Governance - Public involved in research management, decision-making and leadership Support and Learning - Offer support and learning opportunities for public involvement in research Impact -Improvement through sharing differences made by public involvement Thanks for reading today’s post. Clinical Trials Day 2025 Today’s topic is public involvement in research! Public involvement in research is... “research that is done 'with' or 'by' the public, not 'to', 'about' or 'for' them” For example, this might involve patients or carers and they could have a say in... the design of the research, what happens, and how the research results are shared. It does not mean that they take part as a research participant! Public involvement in research is important! It can: Make sure research answers the questions important to patients Make sure that the research is designed so participants are less likely to drop out Make information about the research more understandable, such as the patient information sheet Make sure the results are shared in the best way to reach those who might be interested

During WW2, Nazi doctors carried out experiments on humans in concentration camps. Some of the research carried out included testing medicines, or exposing people to extreme conditions. For example, freezing temperatures to induce hypothermia so they could try to find cures for the military. The Nuremberg Code was created in response to discovering these experiments. It sets out 10 standards that researchers have to adhere to when carrying out research on humans. Nowadays, human research requires ethical approval before it can start. This is provided by an ethics committee, who will be looking at how the researcher plans to ensure informed consent is organised for the research project, amongst other things. Many researchers, particularly those involved in researching new medicines, undertake Good Clinical Practice (GCP) training. This teaches researchers about the legislation and research standards - including on informed consent Thanks for reading today’s post. Clinical Trials Day 2025 Today’s topic is informed consent! What does informed consent mean? Why does it matter? Informed consent is when a person is told about the research and what it involves, choosing freely to take part in it. This generally happens before the research. This is an important part of ensuring research involving humans is carried out ethically. However, this was not always the case.... In the 1930's, the US Public Health Service started the Tuskegee Syphilis study, to observe “the natural history of syphilis”. Black men with and without syphilis were involved in the study but informed consent was not taken. In the 40's, penicillin was being used widely as a treatment but this was not offered to the men. In the 70's, a story about the study was published, resulting in the trial being stopped. By that time, 74 were still alive. 128 had died of syphilis or complications, 40 wives were infected and 19 children had congenital syphilis.

1948 The NHS was established. The care and treatments available in the NHS to date have been possible through research advancing medical knowledge. 1964 The Helsinki Declaration A set of over 30 ethical principles for human medical research was agreed. This includes principles on the use of placebos, research ethics committees and informed consent. 1996 Good Clinical Practice is published. This is a set of quality standards which are internationally recognised for medical research. Researchers today are still expected to meet these standards when planning their research. 2019 UK Public Involvement Standards launched. The National Institute for Health and Social Care Research (NIHR) launched these standards as a UK wide commitment for quality and consistent public involvement in research. Public involvement aims to give people (such as patients or the public) a voice in how research is designed and conducted. This week we will be sharing little facts about clinical research. Today is a timeline of important dates! We hope you find it interesting 😊
International Clinical Trials Day 2025 20th of May is International Clinical Trials Day. Read for a brief history of some key milestones. Arrows pointing right 20th May 1747 James Lind started the first clinical trial on this day. Lind was looking into scurvy treatments for sailors on long sea voyages. Lind compared various treatments including cider, vinegar, oranges and lemons. 1863 First clinical trial using a placebo. If someone is given a placebo, then that means they are not given the ‘real’ medicine or active ingredients being researched. Instead they get a ‘fake treatment’. This lets people see whether any results come from the medicine being researched or not. 1943 The first double blind trial was carried out. A double blind trial means that that neither the participant nor the researcher knows which study group the participant belongs to. For example, the participant could be getting a placebo or the medicine being researched. This is done to reduce the risk of bias - meaning it is more likely that the results are accurate. 1947 The Nuremberg Code was drafted. This is a set of 10 ethical principles for human research, developed following the war crimes of Nazis around WW2. An example of one principle is informed consent.

💙 Our cancer research team has recently enroled their first patient in the Hexagon-HN study. This is a major achievement. @nhsgrampian.bsky.social is the only study centre in the UK and 1 of 11 centres in all of Europe! 👏
