Many don't know that literature isn't actively studied anymore in the university (especially Ming-Qing literature)!

You gotta support independent scholars, where all the *real* research and translation are occurring

Meanwhile co-host K is busy on the blog, performing an epic read-through of more or less every major Ming-Qing novel in its original Chinese

Check out this energetic post, such scholasticism:

This “solution” to the problem of “world’s worst wife” is contrasted with divorce, even despite the strength of Di Xichen’s individual case against Xue Sujie, whose “crimes against nature” were inscribed on her very face and body (after the monkey incident)

We discuss Baoyuean theories of language as use, while also discussing the poetry of Cao Zhi 曹植 (192 – 232), including one “cutting edge” translation.

a post about a novel that is directly in dialogue with Dream of the Red Chamber, is easily one of the greatest queer novels of the 19th century, and which, to this day, does not have an English Wikipedia entry

Or is it Daiyu who should be “called out” for her classist joke?

“Grannie Liu, more like Grannie Locust?, amirite?” 他是那一門子的姥姥?直叫他是個『母蝗蟲』就是了! -Daiyu

Suppose you were facing a lifetime of strangely illiquid “tear debt,” would you seek solace in historical novels and plays that serve no clear moral or dogmatic purpose?

Almost forgot to add, there have been some notable Qiao-jie sightings of late! Rumors of this naming's reflecting Granny Liu's "folk wisdom," confirmed!

As the podcast progresses, these inter-literary connections become more and more foregrounded:

Remember in Chapter 42 of Dream of the Red Chamber 紅樓夢, when Granny Liu uses her “folk wisdom” to choose the name Qiao-jie for Xifeng's daughter, on account of her serendipitously (qiao-he 巧合) being born on the 7th day of the 7th month!

Well, check it out, we got another one!
