My reporting shows students do not struggle because they are incapable. They struggle when support systems do not align with the realities of working and first generation college life. College success is a team effort.

This gap in access — not just existence of resources — makes a difference in who can benefit from them.

Access to resources is not equal when time and schedules are ignored.

The full-time working student said support on campus feels geared to morning attendees:

“The university does a good job supporting students if you come during the day. Afternoon and night students struggle more to find help.”

Research shows that students who work while enrolled are about 20 percent less likely to complete their degrees compared to peers who do not work as much.

This student said many campus services operate from 8am-5pm, forcing students who have evening classes to call off work just to get basic advising or counseling

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, college students are about twice as likely as high school students to participate in the labor force, meaning work is a central part of student life.

Office hours, tutoring, wellness centers, and scholarship opportunities often go unused, even though they exist for students' benefit.

That professor said many students miss out on help not because they lack motivation but because they aren’t aware of resources or can’t access them due to work schedules.

I asked a professor what campus resources students should use more. They told me:
