You could argue that other grimdark works like WH40K can be so over the top sometimes that someone who has basic media literacy can understand the "seperation" of work and reality.

ASOIAF's "type" of misery, (or maybe essence is the better word), is so horribly more real.

Disclaimer, I do still love ASOIAF as the thing that it is. But what it is can also eat you up inside so thoroughly just because of how much misery just permeates through both the work itself, but also through how people receive it (and thats if the audience's media reception isnt MORE miserable)

As someone who invested a lot of their life into ASOIAF, due being one of the moderators (and THE lore guy) in a rather large forum-based Greek community TTRPG game taking place in ASOIAF's world during my late-teens and early twenties...I wanna say: you're way more right than you maybe even realize
