If your opponent breaks rules when you always follow them, this is the only way forward. The idea here is to say, "Ok, I guess I can do this to you now." Then do it. Your opponent will then observe rules out of self interest. (Theories of mutually assured destruction apply here).

ABSOLUTELY. This is the only way forward if your opponent breaks rules & norms when you follow them. Your response: "Ok, I guess I can do this to you now." THEN FOLLOW THRU & DO IT. Your opponent will learn to observe rules out of self interest. (Theories of mutually assured destruction apply).

It is true in some cases, and not true in others. "I was tricked" offers cover to ease cognitive dissonance. Many will need space to say they were tricked: to dodge accountability for such a harmful/malicious choice, or to avoid appearing stupid. The Epstein file might present the perfect excuse.

There is also a fundamental American satisfaction at seeing the people in charge ("elites") doing something patently stupid and getting knocked down a few rungs for it. A very specific form of "Schadenfreude", the underlying resentment of which was harnessed in a populist presidential campaign.

Friendly reminder: these Marines can't merely refuse to follow orders that deploy them to a certain location. Don't assume they personally want to deploy (it's not fun). DO assume that they signed up to serve their country and believe in the Constitution also.
