If you have more information about the casualties I post here then please share.
Congratulations to Kylie Minogue for topping the Christmas charts in the UK.

She kept a song, first released in 1984, from the top spot, one that is played so much every year that it has spawned a game where you win if you can avoid hearing it in the run up to Christmas!

I found another photo for a CWGC gardener. This time it is Edward Patrick (Paddy) Kerstin, who is buried in Harrogate (Stonefall) Cemetery, Yorkshire.

His son posted details about his shocking and sad story here: www.militaryimages.net/media/edward...

Cronenbourg French National Cemetery is a large military cemetery close to the centre of Strasbourg, in the Bas-Rhin department and Alsace region of France. This area has a complicated history, even by European standards.

🧵 You can safely assume someone is from a very large family when 2 different sons are referred to as the 9th and the youngest!

From what I can find out George and Frances Wedd had 10 sons and 5 daughters, born between 1876 and 1896.

🧵 The Podgurski family suffered a double loss in WW2 with brothers Ernest and Alan killed at either end of the war. Their paternal grandfather, a ship's cook, left Danzig, then in Germany but now Gdańsk in Poland, and settled in Sunderland, England, becoming a naturalised citizen.

A high proportion of WW1 casualties have no forenames recorded in the CWGC database, just their initials.

This is not the fault of the CWGC, as their records are only as good as those originally supplied to them.

It's 'Blue Monday' in the UK, supposed to be the most depressing day of the year. Events across the pond today are contributing to this.

Bouzincourt Ridge Cemetery lies 1½ miles north of Albert, France. There are 709 casualties buried here, 313 are unknown. Access is by a farm track - you don't want to meet any oncoming traffic! It can be windy up on this ridge!

Long 🧵!

When choosing what to post I pick a CWGC location I've visited and then look for an interesting story behind a casualty. They all have one, although for many it has been lost to time, and some are too difficult to find or unravel. Now and then something leaps out from the screen!

The road from Albert to Bapaume in northern France runs in an almost straight line SW→NE, and it cuts across The Somme battlefield, although just over half is in the Department of that name. There are roadside markers indicating where the front line was on different dates.

Just inside the Tangenziale ring road on the north-west edge of the city of Modena, Italy, lies the San Cataldo Cemetery. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission records it as Modena Communal Cemetery, and it is probably one of their less frequently visited locations in Italy.
