I thought the incredible cost was because of the liquid helium released from quenching (emergency cut off). I've heard of hospitals being unable to afford the cost to refill the machine.

Weirdly enough, I just played a Flash game called "Save the Clock Tower" with a similar art style. The main character is the old lady that yells "save the click tower" and it's hilarious
