I looked askance at certain lines in the first stanza of this Sherlockian sonnet by Vincent Starrett until I learned it was written in 1942. Some times do indeed get worse.

Obsessed with these women who grabbed a sidewalk table at a coffee shop on Printer’s Row and -started selling books from it-.

This story is weird to me because my only experience with speed dating has been being recruited at the last minute by organizers who didn't have enough women. And men outnumber women on the apps.
This was a long time ago though. Maybe in the 2020s men don't leave the house.

This is so fucking real. Action openings work better in movies because of the relative virtues of the medium, but they are so underpowered in fiction.

Attached: the opening of "Gone Girl," which caused me to immediately take out my credit card at the airport bookstore.

I haven’t read Wilson’s Odyssey, but if you’re trying to say it’s bad, her opening is not the passage to prove your point.

Speaking of fandoms for old books, here are the drinking games rules for watching tomorrow's premiere of "Paging Mr. Darcy," a Hallmark original movie (written by me) set at a Jane Austen convention.
