I lived in Hamilton too, and I took the HSR everywhere I needed to go since I couldn’t afford a car. My roommate had a car and paid to park it off street since he didn’t have an expectation to use public streets for it. On street parking was generally not available and people just dealt with it.

I’m not sure why you are framing this as “poor struggling car owners”. Actual poor people often do not have cars are rely on public transit. And many of those parking on the street are wealthy homeowners who bought hr cars knowing they did not have private parking. Boo hoo to them.

Agreed, which is why we should use the expensive public infrastructure we’ve paid for (roads) to move people more efficiently via public transit. We should also charge private users as much as the market will bare for their use of that expensive infrastructure to fund public transit.

Changing the rules for land use of public land isn’t “punishing” anyone. If you don’t have a place to park your car, don’t buy one or sell the one you have. This really is a “problem” with only one correct solution.
