Kind of amusing, given that in the 1928 presidential campaign, the smear against the Democratic candidate was three Rs: rum (he was anti-prohibition), rebellion (the GOP was still trying to tie Dems to the Civil War), and Romanism (because the candidate was Catholic).

I grew up on Long Island and didn't get my license until 23. Public transit is better (at least, if you want to go to NYC), but not perfect. I never understood why so many people opposed expanding the system - until someone explained the racist part to me.

From what I've seen, if Democratic policies disadvantage people, the press jumps on it; if Republican policies disadvantage people, the press talks about "hard times."
