Lecturer and (Public) Historian of Madness, mental ill-health and institutions. University of Huddersfield, Pennine Heritage and the Mental Health Museum.
Put one of these on a roof once. It was well reviewed. Four stars out of five. And that’s unheard of.

Been on a bit of a world tour of London as part of the Asylum: Refugees and Mental Health project. Really looking forward to uncovering some new histories and working with our partners on the various engagement and impact opportunities.

Fair bit of tone deaf content coming out at the moment, considering the UoH has just announced 300 redundancies.

Always nice to escape to Hebden Bridge and the KTP project with Pennine Heritage. At least there are calmer waters here!

Another challenging year and more change coming but another great student collaboration wrapped up. On a personal level, a highlight to get a mention in Yorkshire County Cricket Club’s Long Room. The exhibition will be be there all season and will be seen by a lot of cricket fans.

As part of the @PennineHeritage #ktp we’ve been working with an intellectual disability group. VERY proud of @HistoryatHud students, Leonie, Lockie, Milly and Noah. Great contributions from the start but taking the lead with a fun activity today. @AHHuddersfield @WeLoveResearch

Busy couple of weeks organising and hosting the Museums and Beyond event this week with the Mental Health Museum. Not easy in the current climate but such great speakers made it worthwhile. Thanks to everyone who made it to Huddersfield and Wakefield.

We are nearly ready to go @hudunipress.bsky.social. We’ve got an interesting inter- and cross-disciplinary line up, a keynote from Dr Verusca Calabria to look forward to, and a chance to catch up with friends old and new! Should be fun! #museumsandbeyond

Much KTP activity in the last couple of weeks including the quarterly management meeting @PennineHeritage. We welcomed a new member to the team. This was a brief quiet moment before he introduced himself and became active in discussions. He was VERY pleased to see us.

Posted with permission. As part of my KTP project, I’m working on an inclusive LD project and involving history undergrads. They’ve learned about the history of LD and now they are working with service users too! This image captures some of the joy of the project. More to follow.

Good to see the New Vic team back on campus this week @hudunipress.bsky.social. Thanks to @rpiggott.bsky.social for organising and the invite.

In the midst of all the HE pain had a joyous day at Pennine Heritage yesterday. As part of the KTP we ran a first session with a local LD group. A chance to explore heritage, punctuated by rounds of spontaneous and communal singing. Great support (and harmonies) from our student research team!

Lovely project meeting at Pontefract Castle today. Cold but bright.

Did a project with Leeds Mencap a few years ago and any excuse to post this pic from their archives. Have a new LD project on the horizon to look forward to too.

Big news on the next REF and a recognition of, er, ‘Institutional complexities’. An interesting way of assessing the current situation in HE.

Double header with the brilliant @rpiggott.bsky.social today!

Two teaching weeks to go and three weeks to the holidays! Seems like a good time to change my profile pic.

Cold today but the National Coal Mining Museum for England is a fantastic resource and offers a mean underground tour.

Student trip to to the Mental Health Museum yesterday as part of my third-year module, Mindsets. Small group sessions with Jane and Sally and lots of interest in the Museum and the hospital site, then and now. A good chance to see some theory in action.

Hebden Bridge station always looks good - even on a wet November day.

Draft programme for this ready to go. Should be a good few days.

The first Denby Dale pie was baked by villagers to celebrate George III’s recovery from madness. Approx ten miles from Huddersfield, pies have been made infrequently since to mark key events.

Spotted earlier today. What can it mean? Re-do? Re-done? Re-histories?

Bonfire night in the UK and a good excuse to post these pics from the old Standard Fireworks site in Huddersfield.
