Their icons were nearly vintage at this point: white circles around blue symbols that only vaguely referenced the humans they implied. Kinsey fell into the anonymity. She loved the way the old forums made her feel like she was a minnow in a school of fish, navigating circles around each other towards a similar general direction.

“In the interest of being clear,” Krile said, her voice wavering even though the adrenaline of courage kept her talking, “when I said that I wanted to wish you luck, I meant I wanted you to come home to me.” She walked into the space between his knees and stood on the tips of her toes to brush a strand of hair behind his ear. He was still too tall, even now. Krile rubbed at a smear of dirt at his jawline, then lifted her hand to press against his pulse point. He wrapped his fingers loosely around her wrist. When he swallowed, she could feel it.

Krile wiped her tears away with the back of her sleeve and stood, bringing them closer together than they had been since he'd carried her across the fields of snow. His eyebrows were pinched together in concern, and his hair reflected the dim light like the color of the moon in simpler times. She reached up to touch it, to twine it around her fingers, and wrapped her arms around his neck instead. His breath stuttered and he pulled her into his chest. "I know you don't need luck," Krile said, "but I would like to wish it to you anyway."

"Estinien," Krile said, letting herself further into his makeshift hideout. The way she took up the space despite her small frame spoke well of her power. It silenced kings and commanded loyalty of the strongest people on the star. Her voice, in contrast, was as soft as freshly dried linens on bare skin. "I won't insult you by pretending I'm here on a social visit,” she said. She walked to him, close enough to touch, and he had no choice but to meet her gaze.

Her hand fit around his first two fingers. It reminded her of the stories she'd been told as a child about faeries. Those thoughts were far too fanciful for a scientific woman such as herself. The sting of snow against bare skin helped her drive away the thoughts of anything besides getting up and she used his pauldron to hoist herself into his elbow the way Rahbaun used to carry Nanamo. He stood, the ground quickly retreating from beneath her and it took all of her strength of will not to squeak when he started to walk. Her knuckles were white as she clutched the straps of his armor, but gods, the cold metal was almost worse than sitting in the snow. She shifted her weight from her buttocks to her thighs and then to her nearly frozen hands in rapid succession.

Krile dusted off her jacket, stood to her full height (meager though it was) and put her hands on her hips. She had a mouth full of an argument ready to go. He hadn't responded to her calls in a month, which was rude at best and a security issue at worst. She was about to let them fly, but something about the way the Azure Dragoon sat made her pause. Estinien had slumped back against the angle of the roof when he had recognized it was her. His hair fanned out white against the terracotta. Pink painted his cheeks and his eyes were just slightly unfocused as he watched clouds disappear toward the darkening horizon.

Are you insane?” Her blue eyes darkened and she leaned over him in a way that tightened something in the pit of his stomach. Her hair tickled his nose as her hands clinically searched for the wetness of blood underneath his hair. He blew the itch away and tried to smother the grin that threatened to escape. Aches notwithstanding, he didn't mind having her full attention. “But I did, though,” he pointed out. “Take the blow, that is. Turns out my shields are indeed as good as I thought they were.” “Do you think this is funny?” Gwen looked like she was torn between smacking him and leaving him there, despite the conjurer's cane that was held awkwardly in gauntleted hands. “A little,” he admitted, and yelped when she prodded at his broken arm. “I had it,” she snarled, the pale glow of healing magic gathering in the hook of the wooden staff. “You could've put your damn shields on me.” His arm prickled. The cure chilled him despite his thick woolen jacket. He shivered when it dissipated.
