There’s something that doesn’t make sense. Let’s go poke at it with a stick.
And lastly, Shepard refused to remain a "passenger." He was diagnosed with Ménière's disease and was grounded after his Mercury mission, but he fought hard to regain active flight status. After an experimental surgery and lots of effort, he walked on the moon as the commander of Apollo 14 at age 47.

Second, backlash from the media, military, and *the astronauts themselves* about the passive role of the pilot led to a total redesign of the capsule after Shepard's flight. This gave much more control over positioning and reentry, and Chuck Yeager's "spam in a can" critique became less accurate.

First off, Shepard was mostly a passenger during his 15-minute ballistic flight, but he did have limited ability to control pitch and yaw. That, and the entirely experimental nature of his vehicle built "by the lowest bidder," would qualify him as an astronaut even by today's FAA metric.

Thus, my real answer is Ben Solo. Because "redemption by death" is the sloppiest, laziest writing trope. He needed to live to atone. And what they did to him makes Rey's story into a tragedy.

As far as I'm concerned, Captain Liam Shaw is just sleeping off an injury. No one ever actually said he's dead!

I'm currently reading this one! In a similar vein, it tackles how the AMNH fossils were found and how they have repeatedly been remounted/re-organized over the years based on new knowledge about how dinosaurs lived and evolved. 🦖
