If I may set out what I interpret to be your system, a person is primarily best described as the country they were born in?
June 25, 2025 at 4:25 PM
So was Brexit a potentially useful step toward ending this damaging system in your view?
June 25, 2025 at 4:23 PM
Correct, everyone knows something that you don’t, as the saying goes.
June 25, 2025 at 4:18 PM
We can all be British!
June 25, 2025 at 4:14 PM
If I may say so, my suggestion was what name to give to those people that would be an accurate, useful descriptor. A collective term equivalent of BAME seemed a neutral way of doing this. Goodwin isn’t racist, he’s quite clearly a liberal. I much prefer British as a primary national identity!

There certainly was an initial impact, large corporations and institutions don’t like change.
June 25, 2025 at 4:07 PM
Interesting. Is a record kept, are they shared between countries?
June 25, 2025 at 4:01 PM
Also the topic was government forms relating to ethnicity, in the end there has to be some distinction made or else there no point to the endeavour in the first place. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with not being English, or Scottish or what ever. People should be judged on their merit.
June 25, 2025 at 3:59 PM
Again, if I may say so, that wasn’t what I said. The point was how to best describe a person. What feature stands out.
June 25, 2025 at 3:53 PM
So the idea is that Brexit was harmful to the economy but that mass migration managed to improve the economy just enough to even both effects out? I think far more likely is the Brexit wasn’t a bit factor and our economy has continued on similar path to EU zones because both had similarly policies.

I know a man who has one British parent and one Australian parent. In Britain he is the Australian and in Australian he is the Brit. I expect in Pakistan it would make sense to describe Mr Yousaf as Scottish because that would be an identifying feature. But not so much in Scotland.
June 25, 2025 at 3:39 PM
I’m not saying that at all. This is entirely your framing. I’m saying it is more useful to say a person with two Pakistani parents is best described as of Pakistani heritage just the same as I would if a person had two French parents. Race or skin colour never came into it.

The downward pressure on wages and the upward pressure on housing costs reducing disposable income for working people, lowering GDP per capita and lowering living standards.
June 23, 2025 at 5:18 PM
As I take a different view on the effects of mass inward migration I’d imagine things would be better.
June 23, 2025 at 5:10 PM
Scottish would be a political statement for a Scottish Nationalist? A bit like a Thatcherite insisting you refer to city speculators as ‘wealth creators’. And implying a person is bad if they don’t!
June 23, 2025 at 5:09 PM
I’d respond British and Pakistani. British because that’s the name most use for our State and Pakistani for the granular detail, Asia is a huge place! I don’t understand why taking a different view about which element of a varied identity to place emphasis on necessarily equals racism.
June 23, 2025 at 5:07 PM
So Johnson’s migration policy cancelled out his Brexit policy? Interesting idea.
June 23, 2025 at 4:52 PM
An interesting idea. I will read through. In the mean time I wonder if I may ask a question relating to information sent by Mr Katwala, an official form. In your view which should Mr Yousaf mark? I did ask Mr Katwala haven’t yet received a response.
June 23, 2025 at 4:51 PM
An interesting idea. Many claim Brexit caused the surge in inward migration. I don’t see it personally. In your view should Starmer open up inward migration? Would a completely deregulated, free market, laissez faire approach lead to enhanced growth?
June 23, 2025 at 4:40 PM
Just a quick question, Professor, if mass inward migration is good for the economy why aren’t we seeing a booming economy as we recently have had the largest inward flow of people in the entire history of Britain?
