Reform Political Advertising
@reformpoliticalads.bsky.social
Politically neutral campaign for regulation of electoral advertising. Labour, Lib Dem, Green and 3 other 2024 London mayor candidates signed our ad code.
@jennifernadel.bsky.social from @compinpolitics.bsky.social spoke at our recent event in the House of Commons about the bill they've devised which would make deliberate factual deception by candidates an offence.

This Youtube scam ad was forwarded on to us. Not an election ad but as Conservative MP George Freeman pointed out at our recent HoC event you can see where this is heading for election ads.

Read our recommendation for the Elections Bill below.

It was great to have Labour MP @justinmadders.bsky.social join our panel at our recent House of Commons event “Preventing Disinformation and Misinformation in Campaigning.”

He made some key points about the opportunity we have with the Elections Bill to modernise the rules for our democracy.

🧵A win for political and transparency in Europe – and Reform Political Advertising.

When we launched Reform Political Advertising, we proposed the idea of an independent, public repository for political ads.

We’ve prominent coverage in John Johnston’s excellent Politico Influence newsletter this week.

We are pointing out how it is essential that the government’s efforts to counter disinformation include misleading factual claims in election ads (if that isn’t self evident enough).

🧵 The government published a significant policy paper today "Restoring trust in our democracy: Our strategy for modern and secure elections".

It includes some welcome proposals - including one that we've been campaigning for - but it doesn't go far enough.

🤔 Is this a misleading ad by the Advertising Standards Authority?

It doesn't regulate the most important ads of all ... election ads that influence your vote?

It states on its website its "ambition is to make every UK ad a responsible ad" ... but we're not there yet.

On Brexit anniversary week a spam email with an update on how Alexander Nix (ex Cambridge Analytica) is putting joy into the world lands in our inbox.

There are still no content rules for election ads …we are campaigning to change that. reformpoliticaladvertising.org

9 years since Brexit. We could never have an ad as misleading as this one again could we?

We are bound to as there are still no rules for election ads.

Support our campaign for electoral ad regulation for factual claims (as recommended by the HoL).

Do misleading ads have an impact on our often close run elections?

Support our campaign to have rules for fact based claims in elections ads. (There are none in case you were wondering.)

We are making progress.

We need more leadership like this from Australian MP @zalisteggall.bsky.social on election advertising regulation from MPs in the UK …

Very pleasantly surprised to learn that the Fair Elections All-Party Parliamentary Group is the APPG with most MPs!

After years of talking the ball is certainly in their court to make the next few ones of action.

Great speeches @elliechowns.bsky.social @mp4stratford.bsky.social @blairmcdougall.com

Very much forward to this event tonight at the House of Commons hosted by @elliechowns.bsky.social MP and the APPG for Fair Elections:

Strengthening democracy in an age of volatility.
May 13, 2025 at 5:10 PM
It was a cross-party and unanimous recommendation. Labour should now take the opportunity to implement it.

Keir Starmer campaigned on rebuilding trust. His first speech said he was going to do that through: “action, not words.” This is that moment.

The Case of North Tyneside: A Warning Sign.

Our ad monitoring project uncovered a striking example. The Conservative mayoral candidate in North Tyneside, Liam Bones, launched a Facebook page disguised as a local media outlet: “North Tyneside Matters”.

Some nice feedback from the other place.

Thanks for sharing that Alison - that's an interesting perspective. Although any distortion of the vote through the disinformation still needs to be stopped. It was a close run race.

Congratulations Ros Jones who signed up to our ad code that commits to “make every reasonable effort not to mislead voters”.

There is no conflict between being honest in your election ads and winning.
