It's honestly a mood-killer when they come up so frequently while I'm looking for art, I won't go after people that draw them but don't assume that everyone will be like you.

honestly I'd probably say that you'll have a decent time on critter.cafe based on a quick glance at your profile. it's very cohost adjacent and they hardcode out all the numbers but the community there is very nice from what I've seen and they're good at keeping it running

By my understanding Mastodon can't have that. It's intentionally fragmented thanks to ActivityPub federation, so you're generally meant to pick a server that matches your interest. There are large general servers but those loop back to being Twitter 2 from what I've been seeing.

ideally id go with the second option as it puts me in full control of what i see though as i can choose to cut off from entire servers if they make me feel uncomfortable
unless this is already a thing in normal masto. this learning curve feels like trying to climb a mountain without gear

so ill probably either have to join a server that a friend is hosting (none of my friends have the technical knowhow to host masto servers) or try to host one myself (even if i learn how to operate a server i cannot possibly pay for server costs)
