Agreed. He shouldn’t apologize. It’s not like he was celebrating Kirk’s death. Cancel culture seems to be on the other foot now. I guess we’ll find who really cares about freedom of speech by comparing people’s views then and their views now.

I take the view that there are no exceptions to civility in political discourse, but I’m open to hearing what cases you believe justify incivility.

If strong emotions justify abandoning civility, who decides that line? Second, it’s precisely when civility is dismissed that debates lose their chance to stay productive. I’ve witnessed this more times than I can count. It just turns into moralizing performativity, and it no longer has utility.

Civility is orthogonal to content. Would you rather a civil racist or a violent racist? The choice should be obvious. If the ideas are the problem, then why not target them instead of civility? Why not call it ‘racism porn’ or something more appropriate for your earlier example?

I view the term as subtly pro-violence because it seems to target the act of civility itself, as if it’s not a worthy aspiration, even under sordid circumstances. Civility isn’t the problem; the ideas are. And ideas can be dealt with in a civil way. If not, then only violence remains as an option.

I suppose it depends on what exactly you mean by civility porn. What I would say is that talking that isn’t civil is rarely productive.

You realize the only options are talking or violence, right? Civility porn is better than murder porn, which is absolutely what we will get if we abandon conversation. Besides, don’t better ideas have the advantage of carrying truth and logic? That’s not trivial.

You realize the shoe is simply on the other foot now. I don’t know what your position was when people were getting cancelled for misgendering others, but I would say that celebrating murder is far worse.
