This is a concept that I think a game like Metroid Fusion, for example, fails to deliver on.

So, they started intentionally being designed that way. You can see the consequences of this in Dread because the way its abilities and levels are designed, naturally results in there not only being multiple of these intentional shortcuts, but just as many unintentional sequence breaks as well.

It's true, the way people play Super Metroid was unintentional originally, but everyone ended up naturally doing so and it's the reason that Super Metroid became so influential. That influence made that unintentional way of playing it, become the way to play a Metroidvania.

I do think I'd like to offer a bit of push back though to the view of it as a flanderization of Super Metroid. I rather think it's the natural consequence of it actually, a natural evolution of the genre of Metroidvania as a whole.

An extremely intriguing thought that I've never considered! After all I feel a sequence break inherently implies that it's unintentional. I would agree that "intended" ones are instead shortcuts, a perfect example being the unique cutscene for having the bomb early for fighting Kraid in Dread.

Absolutely agree. Not the end of the world. It's just ridiculous to me that scalping isn't a solved issue at this point after years of experiencing it

Mine also says still sitting in line. Trying not to get my hopes up, but glad it's not just me at least. That kinda makes it feel like it might mean something?
