We don't even have to look elsewhere. The parts of the US where immigrants live (and where they have to assimilate) have way over 15%. E.g., NYC has 38%. I'd bet that most immigrants are going to have an easier time assimilating in NYC than a born-American from the rural midwest.

It's also one hell of a main-character syndrome.

So I suppose people should be punished for getting older and therefore less healthy. If they were smart, they would stay young. Duh.

Exams are not just for assessment, they are actually part of learning. Anyway, it is a though and complicated problem. And given where student outcomes are going, we are actually doing worse and worse (though that's probably more due to phones and ai and such not more accommodations). So ... 5/5

But the knee jerk response to an asshole like Barro should not be let's give time accommodation to everyone who asks. Something like accommodation can actually hurt students by removing motivation to learn to do something well, because you can always muddle through it given enough time. 4/n

So there is a certain amount of emphasis on being able to do basic math quickly, because otherwise you can't explain more advanced topics to that person. Now does that mean we should get rid of time based accommodations? Of course not. But it's a tough problem. 3/n

A smart student can get through a calculus exam even without algebra being second nature given enough time. But following lectures will get harder and harder if you can't follow what's being computed on the board in real time. It gets harder and harder as time goes on. 2/n

Josh Barro is a moron, but let me push back a little bit on time limits. For example in math, if one is to get a little further, one has to e.g. be able to do algebra quickly. So training (drilling) to do certain things fast is to make learning further material even possible. 1/n

Well, perhaps lilac ought to be banned!

Vance thinks that "Scientific method" means skipping all the steps in the method between the first step, "Ask a question", and last step, "Make a conclusion".

You'll get over it. It takes a few years. Though I still get excited about going down a long steep hill.

My current house I bought 12 years ago for 145k in a different part of the country. Zillow says it is 254k now (that's better than inflation ... Yay! ... 145k in 2013 is like 202k now).

Anyway. Still pretty affordable.

My first house I bought in '07 (was 29 then) for 125k (that's 195k in today's money). Sold it 3 years later for 118k. It is now valued at 168k on Zillow.

People forget that there are large parts of the country where housing is still cheap and hasn't really gone up.

We could probably save money by removing the "testicular torsion" from covered surgeries. Only 1 out of 4000 men ever use that "benefit". If the insurance didn't cover it, premiums would be slightly cheaper and only 1 out of 4000 men would ever get effected.

There ... I solved healthcare.

I look forward to some redistribution from comrade Trump. Down with capitalism!
