Tadashi leans against the garden shed with a sigh. Out of sight of Aiichirou and the aunts, he can finally let his guard down. Here, he can indulge his unsightly habit, one that he would rather not have to explain to anyone. He pulls a crumpled cigarette pack from his back pocket. With a flick of his lighter, the scent of cheap nicotine fills the air. The first drag is the sweetest, soothing the jagged edges of the day’s tension. “I didn't know you smoked, Tadashi.” When he looks up to see Ainosuke standing there in his uniform, any relief he feels is quickly undone. Canon | mild NSFW | Ainosuke sees Tadashi in his sloppy clothes and it awakens something in him "Ainosuke-sama," Tadashi protested, acutely aware of his sloppy grey track pants and faded navy sweatshirt and the mess that was his apartment behind him. "I wasn't expecting… What do you need?" Ainosuke didn't answer, instead pushing Tadashi back in his apartment with hand against his chest. "This sweater has holes in it," Ainosuke pointed out with a vaguely horrified expression. "Ah, excuse me, I can change—" His protest was cut off when Ainosuke pressed him against the nearest wall with a hungry kiss. "These pants don't even fit you properly," Ainosuke said angrily when he pulled away. "I'm sorry, Ainosuke-sama—" Tadashi almost swallowed his tongue when Ainosuke slotted a firm thigh between his legs. Even the hands that slipped under the hem of his sweatshirt didn't appear to be interested in taking it off so much as running over the skin beneath it. "Disgusting," Ainosuke said finally before dropping to his knees in a suit that cost more than Tadashi made in a month… and proceeded to show him exactly what he thought of his choice in clothing.

A different "Morning Routine"
Habit In the morning, Tadashi wakes first. He sleeps lightly enough that the first few bars of his phone alarm are enough to rouse him. Tadashi rolls on his side, wrapping his arms around Ainosuke, and gives himself five minutes allowance before he needs to get the day started. After that, he starts the gentle process of waking Ainosuke up: a kiss on the back of the neck, a gentle shake of his shoulders and, when Ainosuke's eyes open blearily, carefully nudging him until he's sitting up. It's still too early for conversation so Tadashi guides him to the bathroom without a word. Ainosuke is still half asleep when he gets under the shower spray, though he often perks up a little when Tadashi follows him in. Fifteen minutes later, Tadashi turns the water off and Ainosuke blinks at him from beneath a fringe of wet hair. They brush their teeth shoulder to shoulder at the sink; Ainosuke shaves while Tadashi dries his hair and combs it into passable order; he leaves Ainosuke to style his own hair and returns to the bedroom to put on the suit he laid out the night before. By the time he's finished, Ainosuke has come out again. Tadashi helps him dress, not because he needs to, but because he likes to. By the time Ainosuke's tie is neatly in place, his red eyes are alert and intent. By then, they still have ten minutes to spare before they need to be at breakfast. That time can be filled with many things, but often enough it's this: Ainosuke carefully tugging Tadashi close for a long, slow kiss that goes on and on. "Morning, Tadashi," he'll murmur against his mouth when they finally pull apart. "Good morning, Ainosuke," Tadashi replies with a small, private smile before he ushers them out.

He feels the gentle touch of Ainosuke's nose against his, brief and soft, before Ainosuke pulls back, looking suddenly shy. "It's a greeting in some cultures around the world," Ainosuke babbles, by way of explanation. "Anyway, I have to go to my tuition now. Let's skate after, Tadashi!" Ainosuke is off again like a shot, leaving Tadashi staring in his wake, blood rushing to his cheeks and ears.

Tadashi at rest (which Ainosuke thoroughly encourages)
Nap Ainosuke is good at tempting Tadashi into many things, but one of his favourites is to make him rest. After all, a nap is one of life's greatest pleasures and Ainosuke does so enjoy indulging in those. It takes a good amount of coaxing and cajoling for Tadashi to acquiesce, but when he does, it's always worth it to see the shadows under his eyes lighten just a little bit. He's not being purely altruistic, of course. Ainosuke sleeps deeper and more readily when the other man is nearby. He gets to arrange himself around him, head pillowed on Tadashi's chest, and let himself be lulled to sleep by his warmth and the steady rhythm of his heart. And when Ainosuke wakes up later, tangled and too warm, he can kiss Tadashi awake — slow and easy, with no urgency to go anywhere. Lock screen Ainosuke’s phone lock screen is the default set on his phone: a macro shot of a pink flower with dewdrops on the petals. It’s safe and inoffensive and positively boring, but at least he doesn’t have to worry about someone looking over his shoulder and catching sight of something inappropriate. However… if Ainosuke didn’t have to be discreet or careful or appropriate at all times, his lock screen would be this: Tadashi napping on the settee in Ainosuke’s study on a Sunday afternoon. His mouth is half-open, his hair mussed and sticking up at the back; the mid-afternoon sun is filtering through the window and lighting up his face like a halo. If Ainosuke had his way, he would look at the photo every day, show it to his colleagues and brag until people were sick of him. As it were, it lives in a hidden folder on his phone, tucked out of view but always within easy reach. When they're apart and Ainosuke misses Tadashi like a phantom limb, he’ll take the photo out and stare at it; until the ache eases and a real smile comes back to his face.

Thread of some past #Tadaai I've written that fits their dynamic of the #sk8OVA 'Morning Routine' short (not really spoilers, just general vibes)

PDA Ainosuke looks forward to their trip for many reasons. For one, it's the first time they'll be alone in a place where no one knows them. For another, he'll finally have the chance to indulge in the affection he is denied on a daily basis. However, the moment he goes to kiss Tadashi on an anonymous street corner just because, the other man is quick to step away from him. "What are you doing?" Ainosuke snaps, hurt by the rebuff and trying not to show it. "I'm sorry. You surprised me, that's all." Tadashi steps in again and presses a kiss to his cheek, awkwardly. It happens again. Tadashi flinches when Ainosuke reaches for his hand, stiffens when he pulls him closer, ducks away when he leans in for a hug. After the fifth apology that day, Ainosuke realises that it's not personal; Tadashi has simply been trained to be cautious, to hide his affection away. Ainosuke decides then and there that he will just have to train him otherwise. Over the course of their holiday, Ainosuke makes it a rule to hold hands wherever they go. He drops kisses on Tadashi out of the blue — against his lips, his forehead, behind his ear, and anywhere he can reach. He hugs him when they're waiting at traffic lights and when he wants to read his phone over his shoulder. By their trip's end, Tadashi's palms no longer sweat, he no longer flinches, and he leans into Ainosuke's touch rather than away. When they are back in Okinawa, it feels like everything they learned has been lost. The careful distance between them returns and Ainosuke already hates it. The hours of the day seem especially long, that is until he feels it: the brush of Tadashi's fingers against the back of his neck, gentle but deliberate all the same. The casual affection runs through him like electricity. Tadashi gives him a small smile; Ainosuke presses a brief kiss to the corner of it joyfully. It seems he did manage to train him, after all.

A short postscript to the fic below. Where Shen Qingqiu confronts Shang Qinghua about the bespoke jade figurine (read: dildo) that was purchased under his name. (4/4)
Shang Qinghua was happily daydreaming— ahem, hard at work when the door to the Leisure House slammed open. Shen Qingqiu strode in, his mouth twisted like he had bitten into a lemon. “Airplane-bro, what the fuck did you do!?” “It wasn't me!” Shang Qinghua denied immediately. After a pause, he added, “what am I meant to have done?” He flinched when Shen Qingqiu's closed fan thrust into his face. “I received a letter from a master jade artisan recently, thanking me for my patronage. Apparently the ‘cultivation device’ I ordered had inspired him to make more designs like it and they've been selling like crazy. Now all his daughters have full dowries… thanks to me,” Shen Qingqiu explained with barely restrained fury. “What a heartwarming story, Cucumber-bro! Though I have no idea what this has to do with me—” Shang Qinghua stopped mid-sentence as a familiar blueprint was shoved in his face. “I've never seen that drawing before in my life,” Shang Qinghua declared boldly. If there was one thing he was good at, it was telling bald-faced lies under pressure. “That's funny, Airplane-bro, because this artisan recalls his correspondence with you very well,” Shen Qingqiu replied icily. If there was another thing Shang Qinghua was good at, it was pivoting when caught out in said lies. “Look, I just had a little problem that needed some research! You know those plot holes, always needing to be filled… Anyway, it's all solved now, so let's forget about it, hmm?” Shang Qinghua wheedled shamelessly. “Research whatever you like! Just don't involve me next time!” Shen Qingqiu snapped. He shook his head with a frown. “You made Binghe cry.” “...Oh.” Shang Qinghua did feel a bit bad about that. “Don't oh me. Guess who had to spend hours reassuring him that I wasn't buying jade dildos because I was dissatisfied with his performance or because I was bored with him or because I wanted to explore other options…” Shen Qingqiu rubbed his forehead, as if the mere memory was causing him physical pain. “I had to promise all sorts of things before he let it go. You have no idea.” “It can't have been all that bad! I mean, you're still walking fine, so—” Shang Qinghua shut his mouth at Shen Qingqiu's withering look. “Look, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, Cucumber-bro! It won't happen again. And anyway, it ended up breaking, so… Not because of me!” Shang Qinghua added hastily when Shen Qingqiu stared at him. “My king, uh, wasn't exactly pleased that I was—” “Using a jade dildo that resembled his demonic pillar?” Shen Qingqiu supplied archly. “Practicing. I was practicing,” Shang Qinghua insisted (and would do so until his dying breath). His brow furrowed. “Wait, how did you know it was a demon dildo?” “Because you described demonic pillars just like it in your stupid fucking web novel!” “What!? When?” “It was the wife rescue plot line in arc twelve. It went on for twenty fucking chapters!” Shen Qingqiu said, sounding indignant. “Your descriptions of the demon king's pillar were so horrible that they've been permanently seared into my brain.” “Cucumber-bro… you really remember even the most obscure monster details, don't you? I'm so honoured,” Shang Qinghua said with a bow. It was really nostalgic to hear his outrage, too. It was just like reading his comments from the old days! “Forget that.” Shen Qingqiu drew a deep breath to compose himself. “Are you satisfied with the chaos you've wrought?” Shang Qinghua thought back to the many nights (and sometimes afternoons) he had spent with his king since he had received the jade device and couldn't stop a goofy grin from breaking out on his face. “Kind of, yeah,” Shang Qinghua admitted happily. Shen Qingqiu made a noise of thinly veiled disgust. “Next time you try something like this, I'm sending Binghe to deal with you instead.” Shen Qingqiu flipped his fan open, resuming the poser air the Peak Lord was known for, and swept out of the room. Shang Qinghua called after him shamelessly. “Ha ha ha, you're joking, right? Cucumber-bro, you wouldn't, right? Cucumber-bro, wait!”

But those two had made it work, somehow — so it couldn't be anatomically impossible, right? There was a solution to all this and it started with research. He was the An Ding Peak Lord! If he couldn't get his hands on an appropriate, uh, practice device, then what was the point? So Shang Qinghua put through a discreet order to a well-known artisan of jade figurines and statuettes… all under Peak Lord Shen's name, of course.

Beefleaf ficlet continued (7/7)
Awareness returns in fits and starts. Shi Qingxuan feels burning hot, like someone has lit a fire under his bones. The walls of his skull expand and shrink with every breath. He can hear someone moving around him, but he doesn’t have the strength to open his eyes and find out who. Cool, clean water touches his lips and he drinks as much as his parched throat can handle. The darkness beckons and he sleeps again. Time and place lose their meaning. He slips in and out of wakefulness perhaps a dozen times, dreams and memories dancing behind his eyelids. Shi Qingxuan’s head is pounding with the worst hangover he’s ever felt. The bed is harder than he’s used to. Someone has replaced his feather down mattress with stones as a practical joke, no doubt. Though who would dare enter the Palace of Wind and Water to do such a thing is beyond him… He rolls over restlessly, his arm and leg aching. What sort of fool falls into a ditch while trying to find the main road? The kind spoiled by a life of sweetness, so it's what he deserves, really… He cracks his eyes open and immediately regrets it. Even the candlelight by his bedside stings. A figure stands beyond it, pale and shadowed. They press a cool washcloth against his burning forehead and Shi Qingxuan’s eyes slide close with a sigh of relief. It must be Ming-xiong making sure he doesn't fall sick. He feels safe knowing that no matter how his friend grumbles, his actions speak much louder than his words… It is a night of close calls, of Shi Qingxuan sleeping restlessly and mumbling nonsense under his breath. All He Xuan can do is tend to him and hope it's enough. Shi Qingxuan’s fever breaks just before dawn. His breathing clears and his colour settles. A weight lifts from He Xuan's shoulders; he feels tired and relieved in equal measure. He's not sure what he would have done if Shi Qingxuan had left this world. It doesn't bear thinking about. He's so consumed by his relief that he doesn't notice a pair of green eyes staring at him until it's far too late. Shi Qingxuan blinks slowly, as if waking from a dream. For a long moment, neither of them speak. He Xuan has been clinging to shadows and disguises so long that having Shi Qingxuan look at him so directly feels… strange, but not unwelcome. Shi Qingxuan stares. He Xuan is here. He's here, dark gaze unblinking and sharp. Familiar. All these months, he’s been watching, following, and keeping him safe. It doesn’t make any sense, and yet, who else was it going to be? Shi Qingxuan opens his mouth. Closes it again. All the conversations he imagined are nowhere to be found. In the end, He Xuan is the first to speak. “Is it so hard for you to stay out of trouble?” He Xuan demands finally. His exasperated tone is so familiar that Shi Qingxuan can't help himself — he laughs. How many times had he heard Ming-xiong say the exact same thing, in the exact same tone? A measure of tension within him loosens. “It’s the trouble that finds me, He-gongzi!” Shi Qingxuan protests with a smile. He Xuan snorts, disbelieving, but the corners of his lips tell a different story. The words come more easily after that. Maybe it’s his recent brush with death, but speaking to He Xuan no longer feels so dangerous. Shi Qingxuan talks and talks until his voice is rough; he hasn’t talked so much in over a year. And He Xuan listens and interjects whenever he pauses for breath. They fall into a rhythm, one they both know well. It’s not all suddenly easy. The broken edges are still there and things certainly can’t go back to how they were before. But as they talk together in the early morning light, the air crisp and fresh from last night’s snow, it feels like a start.

Post-Canon, alternating POV. Shi Qingxuan keeps almost dying. He Xuan keeps finding him just in time.

In heaven, Shi Qingxuan often revelled in the feeling of having people's eyes on him. These days, he's lucky if passersby meet his eyes straight on. But some days, Shi Qingxuan feels like he’s being watched. It's a hard sensation to put his finger on — like a shiver across his skin, like a pressure he can almost feel — there and gone again. At first, it unnerves him. It makes him jumpy, half expecting to be mugged in the next shadowy alleyway. But after a while of being alone far too much, he almost welcomes it. Company is company, and beggars can't be choosers. One day, Shi Qingxuan is trying to fish a pair of discarded boots out of a nearby river when his footing slips. He falls into the rushing water, panic making his lungs and limbs seize. Swimming used to come naturally to him, but being near water has never been the same since that day. Somewhere in the chaos, he feels a gaze so sharp that it pierces through to the heart of him. But when he looks, all he can see is swirling bubbles and white froth. His crooked limbs struggle weakly against the current and all too soon, his vision goes black. Only when he wakes again, he's on the river bank, soaked to his skin but alive nonetheless. “Thank you,” he whispers and hopes the breeze carries his words to the right place. Maybe he really is losing his mind, but it feels like his rescuer hears him… Or at least, it's nice to pretend for a while that someone out there cares for him still. When He Xuan sees Shi Qingxuan fall into the water, he knows better than to get involved. He’s better off letting the current sweep him away where it will, better off letting the fool suffer the consequences of his actions, better off— Amidst the murky water, He Xuan sees those bright green eyes dim and falter and knowing better doesn’t make a difference. He heaves Shi Qingxuan’s unconscious body onto the riverbank, the boots Shi Qingxuan sought washing up beside him as an afterthought. He slips back into the water just as Shi Qingxuan stirs, spluttering and coughing. He doesn’t want Shi Qingxuan’s gratitude, but the whispered words find him all the same. Winters are harsh in the Imperial Capital. The air is icy and the snow falls thick and fast. The streets have long since cleared; anyone with a self-preservation instinct has run for home, to warm themselves by fires and to fill their bellies with food. Shi Qingxuan is the only one still foolishly trudging through the snow, trying to find his way back to shelter in the dark. His hands and feet are numb; it’s no wonder that he ends up tripping over himself. His crippled leg folds under him as he hits the ground with a pained gasp. The snow continues to fall as he lies on the hard ground, trying to catch his breath. At this rate, he’ll probably freeze to death out here. The possibility should probably scare him, but mostly, he feels tired and cold. There’s no one waiting for him, no one missing him. No one to pull him up and carry him back home, disapproving but still indulging his every whim, even as Shi Qingxuan laughs and teases— He closes his eyes, lulled by the smothering cold and chased by bittersweet memories. He’ll drift away here, like a snowflake on the wind. This time, He Xuan is almost too late in finding Shi Qingxuan. The snow has almost covered him, hiding his still form on the lonely street. He Xuan lifts him in his arms, cursing Shi Qingxuan's foolishness. But even so, he can't just walk away. He brings him back to the rundown shack Shi Qingxuan calls home. He lights a fire, melts snow for fresh water, tears strips of cloth from his robes for rags. On the bed, Shi Qingxuan tosses and turns. It’s going to be a long night.

At work, people stared at Tadashi, both surreptitiously and openly. Tadashi took it all in stride, not even appearing to notice the attention, which was frankly impossible because Ainosuke had done nothing but notice. As the day wore on, he became increasingly annoyed by how shamelessly people showed their interest. While he resisted snapping at onlookers to keep their eyes elsewhere, if he overheard more than one whispered conversation about Shindo-sensei's gorgeous secretary, he would not be held responsible for his actions. But it wasn't just the suit, Ainosuke realised with irritation.
