#OTD 1912: Titanic sank. The next day, newspapers reported NO LIVES LOST. How did this happen?

During wireless chatter, someone asked: "Are the Titanic passengers safe?” The answer came: "The ship is being towed to Halifax and everyone is ok." That 2nd transmission didnt refer to the Titanic.

Und hier noch eine spektakuläre Aufnahme, die der NASA-Astronaut Don Pettit am 28.1.2025 von Bord der ISS gemacht hat.
Eine erkennbare Langzeitbelichtung mit der Erde rechts im Bild. Unser Planet sieht durch die Bewegung recht verwaschen und unscharf aus, was aber dem Gesamteindruck nicht abträglich ist, sondern sogar ein Gefühl für die Geschwindigkeit vermittelt, bei der die Aufnahme entstanden ist. Das Besondere daran: Offenbar von Polarlichtern überzogen ist die Erde hier in ein geheimnisvoll grün schimmerndes Licht getaucht. In der Bildmitte verläuft der gebogene Horizont der Erdkugel in ungewöhnlicher Optik nahezu senkrecht durchs Foto. Er wird von einem grellen Lichtstreifen der auf- oder untergehenden Sonne begrenzt. Links davon das schwarze All mit unzähligen Sternen als hellen Lichtpünktchen und dem markanten Band der Milchstraße.

Guten Morgen zusammen! Wie immer mit einem aktuellen Bild der Sonne via Satellit SDO, heute mal wieder in - Achtung: Fachbegriff! - gletschereisbonbonfarbener Wellenlänge.
Die ganze erdzugewandte Seite der Sonne in türkisfarbener Darstellung. Auf ungefährer Äquatorhöhe sind eine ganze Reihe von Aktiven Regionen heller wiedergegeben. Am Rand eine diffuse Strahlung, die sanft ins Schwarz des Alls übergeht.

Heute vor 95 Jahren, am 18. Februar 1930 wurde Pluto entdeckt, der 76 Jahre lang als der 9. Planet unseres Sonnensystems galt, bis er am 24. August 2006 in die Klasse der Kleinplaneten herabgestuft wurde. In diesen 76 Jahren absolvierte er knapp 30% seines Weges um die Sonne. 1/2

🔭 A Cosmic Rose: NGC 2237 in Monoceros

The Rosette Nebula, NGC 2237, is not the only cosmic cloud of gas and dust to evoke the imagery of flowers, but it is probably the most famous. At the edge of a large molecular cloud in Monoceros some 5,000 light years away, the petals of this cosmic rose are actually a stellar nursery. The lovely, symmetric shape is sculpted by the winds and radiation from its central cluster of hot young, O-type stars. Stars in the energetic cluster, cataloged as NGC 2244, are only a few million years young, while the central cavity in the Rosette Nebula, is about 50 light-years in diameter. The nebula can be seen with a small telescope toward the constellation of Monoceros, the Unicorn. This natural appearing telescopic portrait of the Rosette Nebula was made using broadband color filters, but sometimes roses aren't red.
