You will be able to use it with normal cards and also send/reccieve money with smart cards, without needing an app.

Almost every country works on their digital currency.
They can make agreements (maybe as part of trade deals), where they connect it together. When you would buy anything in shop in Canada with digital euro and it would automatically convert it.

Sorry, I meant major players to switch from Visa and Mastercard.
There doesn't need to be any commercial entity that takes fees between me and someone i want to pay.
ECB will do that as public good.
January 28, 2026 at 5:25 PM
Because there is no major player, and everyone uses different systems. Merchants will have to support digital euro by law, if they accept any other digital payment.
January 28, 2026 at 5:06 PM
It will be paid by EU and banks. Do you know how many companies are currently involved, if you buy something with credit card?
January 28, 2026 at 5:03 PM
Yes banks and other services will be able to integrate it directly into their apps and there will also be official EU wallet app, so you will be able to pay online without needing to have commercial bank account.

They are similar, but pix is just payment processor as far as I know. Drex (Digital Brazilian Real) will be equivalent in Brazil.
January 28, 2026 at 4:26 PM
It will save citizens lot of money. ECB is public institution so it doesn't need to make profits and pay dividends to shareholders, it just needs to pay for maintenance, so it can keep fees low.
January 28, 2026 at 4:21 PM
It will be free only for personal use.
Offline payment will probably be also free, because it uses only device to transfer money.
Merchant fees will still be there, just much lower.

We have good friendships and free trade partnerships with a lot of countries.
We also have 3 trilion dollars in us bonds, that we can sell.
We own 51% of shipping capacity and growing.
So, yes we can do it and we are already doing it, but it just takes time.
It will be much harder for US to do it.
January 18, 2026 at 1:59 PM
60% of US wireless trafic runs on Ericsson HW. Second largest carrier in US is german T-mobile.
They mainly have advantage in SW, but they are dependent on european HW for manufacturing.
EU is building digital euro, if we need to chage fast we can jump to wero in the mean time.
January 18, 2026 at 1:59 PM
Yes we are dependent on US, but we also have good alternatives for almost everything.

Military has been changing since 2022, and we are in very diferent place now, we aleready outproduce them on ammunition.

We are world leaders in healthcare, US is just leader in extorting money from patients.

They did not contract Amazon. ESC is just Amazon pretending to be European in hopes to keep customers.
January 18, 2026 at 12:20 PM
They aren't going to be your overlords, they are nice people. You will probably get a LEGO set with your new citizenship. :D
January 17, 2026 at 8:04 PM
You think we are afraid of putins imaginary nukes? We crossed the red line for launching nukes 86 times and still nothing.
"nuke maintenance" translates to "new yachts for putins friends" in russian.
January 14, 2026 at 11:56 AM
We certainly can. It will be pain for Europe, but it will hurt US exponentially more. We have lot of friends and allies, US doesn't and it is becoming more and more irrelevant on global stage. And we are already slowly doing it for few years.

It depends on specific communities, when I look at art/gamedev/sports there is a greater and healthier engagement than on X.
I kept X just for 3D printing (that's non existent here), but I finally deleted my account there 2 days ago, after recent grok bikini thing.
I don't want to support it.

Everything on Bluesky (AT Protocol) is public, so anyone can download all the data and setup competition. It is also modular, you can just store data or run whole social network with all the data and moderation tools on raspberry pi at home, but it might not be fast.
January 13, 2026 at 10:47 AM
Yes, there is Eurosky and it should start this month. You will be able to move your account and data to european server and still be able communicate with other people normally on bluesky or other ATProtocol based apps. There is also Gander Social for Canada.

It will not be fight to dominate the markets. New monetary system will be more decentralized and based on partnerships between countries.
Fortunately for EU, we have a lot of friends and partnerships.
So I don't see future in private sector, at least for payments, there will still be room for banks.
January 12, 2026 at 4:55 PM
Sure, but there will also be public PSPs like post office.

I think digital euro will have simpler path outside of Europe by working together with other CBDCs, as it could be part of trade deals and it is political win for both sides.

Wero will have to make deals with each bank in each country.
January 12, 2026 at 4:55 PM
Why should there be private corporations taking it's cut if I want to give money to a friend or my favorite local restaurant?
I would rather give that cut to them.

Wero doesn't allow offline payment, operates only in 4/27 countries and it only exist because of digital euro.

5. We have been allying with democracies for decades, Trump just made making new allies easier for us.
7. People who are under at risk of government persecution can apply anytime.
8. We have multiple initiatives EU and national.(Choose Europe, Horizon Europe) Canada is also poaching a lot of people.
January 11, 2026 at 6:40 PM
2. Now that Grok is generating CSAM, something might happen soon.
3. That's the job of US citizens, not the EU.
4. Rapidly building defense forces has been a priority since 2022, we just don't talk about it. We are already the largest producers of ammunition.
