This month we celebrate Darwin Day. Feb 12, back in 1809 is the actual birthdate of Charles Darwin. We celebrate Darwin Day because Charles Darwin’s discovery of the common descent of all living creatures and the discovery of the process of natural selection are fundamental to the Humanist Philosophy. Before Darwin, scientific and non-religious thinkers could doubt religious teaching about the genesis and nature of life, but they had no alternative explanation. Darwin’s theory of evolution, thoroughly proven through fossil discovery and the genetic relationships of all living things, provided that alternate explanation for the first time. Other scientists in many fields have strengthened and broadened the evidence that the faith-based story of creation and the purpose of humanity is false, but Darwin was the first to provide a comprehensive natural explanation of the living world and that is why the defenders of religious faith refuse to accept evolution as a fact and heap scorn on Darwin and his theory. Darwin explained how life could be so complex and varied without a creator and that there was fossil and living evidence that no god created the diversity of life. He was brilliant in seeing this pattern, painstaking in cataloging thousands of examples of his theory in action and brave in his willingness to publish his work knowing that he endangered himself in challenging religious orthodoxy. Brilliant, painstaking and brave - and he put our intuition that we have no creator on a solid basis of evidence. For that we honor Charles Darwin on his birthday.
