@camillakgilmore.bsky.social Thanks for including my paper in your advent reading list! I totally agree - there are so many different ways we describe math talk and many of them focus on number of utterances. I’d love to see if these clusters replicate in other data!

Math Discussers had children who spoke more about math. Parent math talk styles did not relate to children’s math or language skills. These results encourage the use of person-centered approaches to understand the nuances of how parents talk about math with their children.

I identified 3 styles of parent math talk from observations of parents interacting with their 4 year old children. Math Commentators used mostly math statements, Math Elicitors used mostly math questions, and Math Discussers used a mix of both.
