Women in the future took a lot of heat on those early DS9 episodes. Not as much ranting on the Voyager era. It still comes out sometimes!

She had to be successful for the show to continue! That’s why episodic tv can sometimes lack impact (because it harder to write). I might be misunderstanding your point, but I think they tried to show her arc with the fire scene and then her surveying the destroyed bridge and taking one last shot.

Yeah he’s the gatekeeper. Early Trek was both groundbreaking and problematic for women in almost equal measure. But regardless, the ground was broken and we watched and we continue to watch as the women characters were written better and better. So screw that guy, women are fans.
